View Full Version : WinXP bootup time
hypernatic.net 01-27-2002, 09:19 AM Howdy,
Question: Suddenly WinXP takes about 50-60 secs to boot up, this used to be approx 20secs... Any idea how I can speed this up?
I have an AMD XP 1700+ - 512MB RAM - 60GB 7200RPM Seagate
Thanks
Walter 01-27-2002, 09:54 AM That's a bit strange, usually XP is a lot faster, e.g. it boots faster than NT.
Maybe your disk is hevily fragmented?
No more space on the boot partition?
Event logs full?
Did you change anything in your network or hardware?

I have found out the hard way that XP sometimes reacts strange when the logs are full. A user without administrator privileges couldn't login on a XP box, the system told him that his password was wrong. I changed the password and still couldn't login, except as an admin.
The reason? The system log was full and only admins can login when this happens, but XP told him his password was wrong.

So when I delete these all will go faster?
How do I delete them? (what files)...
Is it safe to delete?
Walter 01-27-2002, 10:16 AM LOL, it's safe to delete them, but first check if they are full. I didn't say a full log is the reason for the slowness, but who knows :)
Deleting: Start, system control, event log. Pick one of the three log types and click on properties, then you see if it's full. And there is even a delete button.

Softerweb 01-27-2002, 10:24 AM Hi
What part of the boot is taking longer then usual?
Pre or post user login?
hypernatic.net 01-27-2002, 10:25 AM the thing with the black screen and the progress bar :D
PERL SCRIPTOR 01-27-2002, 02:29 PM I find that when XP Home Edition and Pro (I've ran both) load up fairly quickly to the login screen. However, once you login and are brought to your desktop it takes about 20 to 30 secs for the system to be fully up to speed since it is starting all the background processes etc... however, if I turn on my computer in the morning and then login say in the after noon I have no problems with XP being slow since while it is at the login interface I believe it loads all the shared setup programs such as anti-virus, video drivers, and any other background process.
and this occurs on a
Sony VAIO
1.2 GHz
512 MB
64 MB Radeon 7500
60 GB hard drive
so it's a fairly recent computer, plus XP Pro was just installed 5 days ago.
RackMy.com 01-27-2002, 06:03 PM Have you added any new hardware or software?
hypernatic.net 01-27-2002, 06:05 PM Nope
