View Full Version : ASP for Linux - forget it?

Gosh, I've been a moody poster this week, so why not keep it going?

Last weekend I finally set aside some time and spent a good 6 hours making ChiliASP work. Trying anyway. Just a heck of a time with virtual hosts, and though the documentation was not very clear I think I was doing it right, it just wasn't any good. (Most of the ChiliASP documentation consists of the phrase "it's easy, just go to the web-based admin and click...")

I finally got everything configured, and was running some test scripts I wrote. Then I copied them over to a test-customer site, ran the script - more or less a "hello world" script, and it actually froze my whole webserver! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! Right then I did an "rm -rf" on the ChiliSoft install dir and that was that.

Anybody else have success with ChiliASP or another product? I realize there are several out there that support Perl, I'm talking about VBScript specifically. (I would imagine most people who request ASP mean to ask for VBScript ASP.) In the meantime, I've pretty much resolved to never support ASP. (Even though I do a lot of ASP development myself.)

I look forward to hearing my experience is not typical!
Thanks,
Adam

Well, we run ChiliSoftASP on one of our servers, and I can say that 1.) It does work, and 2.) It is a memory hog.

What type of hardware were you testing on?

Thanks for the interest.

I was running on PIII/650MHz with 256MB Ram, but there's not much on it. The swap usage is "0" although I've rebooted since then.

I was able to make it run okay, even MySQL connections, but it just struck me as unstable. Also, I'm picky about security, I want things to run as the user that owns them, and I want them to see only their directory structure. But I could let the ASP run as another non-priv user, and I did investigate the configuration switch to block outside-of-homedir file accesses.

My biggest issue was trying to disable certain virtual hosts. If I took a host out of the Chili conf file, it could still run ASP through the "default" apache virtual host for some reason. If I took out the server-wide "documentroot" directive, it worked, but that's hardly a solution. I don't know why I've developed such a bias against ChiliASP, maybe I need more patience and open mind.

Hello
I am not convinced about Chillisoft.
As Linux cannot emulate MSSQL, Access or any of the IIS features I am not sure if customers would be happy using aplatform where they will eventually hit programming problems.

Just my 1p (2c, 0.01 Eur)

Eeek! Halcyon's iASP runs $995. ChiliASP was $495 I think, but it was free with my dedicated server contracts, probably why I just went that route. I'd have to really sense a demand for ASP before I could shell that out.

BUT

That said, Halcyon provides an Eval download, which I always appreciate, and so I will D/L that and give it a shot. I'll post a little review as soon as I get some time to dedicate to testing it. Maybe I can get them to give me a free copy in exchange for a critical evaluation?
