realistically you couldn't do this unless you had a conection from adsl upwards.

If you have that then get a static ip from your isp and install one of the many peices of server software that are available, mostly free.

not very diffulcult but can only be done if you are not planning on using the pc at all. unless your planning on a site that nobody really visits!

Realistically, it's not sensible to host your site on your own machine, but it can be done.

To host it permanently you need a dsl / cable (or equiv) or higher connection, with a static ip address.

PWS (and what an awful piece of software it is) comes with Windows '98, but it's useless as a webserver, you'd be better off upgrading to Win2k to take advantage of IIS.

You'd then need mail programs, ftp programs, dns programs etc. etc. installed on your machine if your machine was to permanently host your site, so as you can probably see, it isn't advisable to host your site from your local machine.

Also you may need talk to your ISP to make sure they are OK with your running web server. Many ISP's do not allow that.

If you don't have access to a static IP address, and your ISP won't allow you to pay extra for one, you could always sign up with a free service such as hn.org. They allow you to map a real domain name (such as yourname.com) onto a dynamic IP. Else they allow you to use something like yourname.hn.org.

Bear in mind that if your Internet connection goes down, your web site(s) will too. You would probably be better off to cough up a few bucks and get your site hosted somewhere else.

The reason for this is web hosts typically have special-built servers with spare parts in stock, multiple high speed connections, emergency power generators, and so on.

you can do it with something like apache and dsl.

but since your upload speed is limited, the download to your visitors will also be limited to what you can serve them. and if you get alot of visitors, your site will CRAWL. dsl upload speeds were not meant to act as web servers so unless it's just a personal site you want family and friends to see, don't expect many people to want to wait around for your site to download. Don't expect the same kind of speed as a dedicated or virutal server...

These days, it's pointless to host your web site on your machine. A lot of cable/adsl companies charge upwards of $7.00/month for a static IP... you can get a basic webhosting plan for less than that.

You can afford to pay $50 ($70 if Verizon is your phone company) and up for ADSL a month, but you can't shell out 10 or so bucks for a web host? You can always drop the ADSL and go with dial up. :stickout Anyway, with the time and effort it would take to set everything up and maintain it, you could easily make $10. Go wash a car or walk someone's dog...? :D

If you want to run a few simple my dog spot pages for free and with no problem download simpleserver at www.analogx.com it's really easy to use but you won't get a domain name. It takes all of two seconds to set up (no lie), and it's fun if you want to make a page for you and your friends. I used to run a few simple pages using this freeware application, and I still use it occasionally (sp?) Anyway, it's at analogX:

Oh, and I agree, if you want to run a *real* website, fork over a few bucks and buy webhosting space on a shared server. You can get killer plans for about 5-10 bucks from many good webhosts.

good luck

you'll find some excellent choices by looking at this forum:

Or, go to the web hosting request forum and post what you're looking for and what you're looking to pay and you'll get offers.

Hi,

There is a way to host on your box *WITHOUT* a static IP using a DNS lookup service. Basically the way this works is -

1. You park your domain at the DNS service provider
2. Install a small program on your home server
3. whenever your IP changes this program updates the IP on the DNS server

Check out easydns.com - they charge a little bit, but I know there are free ones as well.........do a search on google or your favorite search engine :-)

Hope this helps.

Then you can be like the guy who use to live down the street from me.
They came out and cut his cable service.
Had to watch his little kids cry because they could not watch TV.
Just because dad was cheap and thought he was being slick!
Poor little kids.......................

On win 98 you could use http://www.xitami.com (webserver) and www.powerdns.com (free dns) combo.

Of course you would have to register a domain recommend (pronic solutions if you use them you can use their dns to point to your static hence skipping powerdns), have a static, and use some sort of firewall (like a cheap linksys dsl router) with port forwarding to close down your leaky windows machine.

Xitami and Powerdns are free, yourstatic and router would be the major costs.

Of course paying for service saves MANY headaches.

I thought foxserv was a nice utility to host your site from your own pc. Excellent bit of software, then all you need to do is to signup to one of these companies that offer you a redirector so you can use a domain with a virtual ip
