Hello I am running linux as my desktop and for some reason I am having a couple of problems with it. The first problem that I have is that my sound card isn't detected. So I logged in as root and typed sndconfig to try to manually configure the soundcard and I got an error message saying that the command is not found. I also tried to run Xconfigurator and I got the same error. What else can I do to try to configure this sound card? And the second problem that I'm encountering which isn't a big deal, but I have a logitech optical mouse, and I cannot use the scrolling wheel on it, but otherwise the mouse works perfectly. Can anyone give me any advise on what I should do to fix the problems?
Thanks

You may have those programs, but the directories they are in might not be in your path. Try "whereis Xconfigurator"
If you have whereis it will try to tell you where Xconfigurator is located. You can also use it to find sndconfig.

What Linux distribution are you using? It is a standard install?

Joe-
Thanks for your reply. I reinstalled the OS (Redhat 7.2) with just the workstation install and now the Xconfigurator command works but I still cannot get the sndconfig command to work, as it still gives me that error message. Also, something that I have noticed is that the computer is freezing every 15-20 minutes, so I keep on needing to press the reset button on my computer. I thought that linux was supposed to be a stable OS, the only thing stable about it is the fact that my computer should be freezing up in about 5 minutes. Could this be a hardware problem?

Thanks

I installed Redhat 7.2 on a system yesterday and sndconfig was installed at /sbin/sndconfig

I haven't tried running it since I don't have speakers attached to that computer.

I've never seen a Linux system that wasn't at least reasonably stable, but I don't have all that much experience with it from an admin standpoint. Your system definitely shouldn't be freezing at all, but I don't know what to tell you about figuring out how to get it to stop.

Hi insider,
What all are you running when your computer locks up? Also, what are the specs on your machine.

dan the specs are a
900MHZ celeron
384MB RAM
20 Gig HD
NIC

When the computer crashes, I'm just either in konqueror, or netscape, and maybe in FTP. But it usually just crashes with one program open.

I'm assuming your in KDE if you are using konquerer. When you say crash, do you mean xwindows dies, or the whole computer freezes? Can you do "ctrl+alt+F1" to switch to another terminal?

dan the whole computer freezes as i can't move the mouse, open a new terminal, close any open programs, nothing it just freezes.

It may just be Xwindows locking up...

next time it crashes, try Ctrl-Alt-Esc which will restart Xwindows.
