I had a domain hosted with a donhost reseller and donhost deleted my domain without warning, notice or email. This is the second time they did it. The first time this ian guy told me that a perl script I wrote was using too much resources and after I agreed to move to a php script He agreed to enable our account again after being down for two weeks.
This time he has not even replied to me or the reseller.
This company is evel and please check if the host you are concidering is a donhost reseller.
This domain "neapolitan.org is a small nonprofit dog club with a small website and a even smaller bank account that they trusted me to secure this years hosting. Now after 3 months I have to ask them to pay for an additional bill. Boy I feel foolish and cheated.
This couldnt have come at a worse time, 4 weeks before the clubs yearly dog show and just when our message board was getting a few hits.
We will be looking for a new low cost host so if anyone has advice please email me at rockbust@optonline.net

You might want to look into the message board script you were using as this was probably the issue that Donhost had.
I'm not getting into Donhost policy (it's old news) but as far as a few pointers go.
1. Try www.flump.net or www.mbshost.com for hosting.
By all means, ask around for feedback on them or request a few client references.
2. Re: message board scripts...
I'd recommend
a) going for a PHP/MySQL board like phpbb (1.44 or 2)
PhpBB2 is still in pre-release but it's very stable and works well. Fine tuned to avoid high CPU usage and VERY easy to install.
b) if not, avoid flatfile scripts like the plague because a lot of hosts are now banning them on the basis of CPU load going nuts.
Hope that helps anyways...
;)

Yes I was using phpbb. Thanks for the information.

Donhost had a problem with phpBB?
I've never heard of a web hosting having a problem with that particular board before, as it's quite fast, and doesn't really use up many resources.
If you're still looking for a new host, WebSnail.net provides excellent web hosting packages as well, although I think you'll have to pay in £.

Here's that £5 I owe ya ;) ...
Thanks for the plug but I've already pointed Robert in the right direction for the sort of hosting he'll need. I look after technophobic clients who want me to do EVERYTHING :) which is actually easier than looking after an independent client who has lots of questions especially when I've not yet written a FAQ
As for the phpBB2 issue. I have seen a few concerns aired here but they haven't come to anything aside from a temporary ban (which has since been lifted) on one host. That said though, I'm not all that surprised that Donhost pulled the plug on it. They have a very strict usage limit and to be blunt it's way too low for most of the scripts that I use regularly elsewhere, without ANY problems at all. Frankly they have too many sites on one machine so load per process has to be damn near anorexic to be acceptable.
I have made the point before but it's worth reiterating that if you have a site that's going to be using scripts to any level then you're better off going elsewhere.
