I am considering to signup a dedicated server with layeredtech since their reputation is good here. Howerver, I don't know if I should go with RedHat 9.0 or RedHat ES. My tech is familar with both version but he told me that RedHat 9.0 can't be updated so it will have security problem in a long run. But for RedHat ES I have to pay extra $27 per month. Since this server is a low budget one for me, could any of you give me some suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Go with CentOS is the same crap as RHE but without support. IS your call. You want something free and almost as good as Red Hat Enterprise for Free go with CentOS. We use them and we're happy with it.

Redhat 9 has been EOL by redhat earlier this year. That means there is no more official updates for it from Redhat. There are 3 options available for you to update Redhat 9 :-
1) Since all components are 3rd party and available on the web. You can compile them yourself and install them
2) Use Progeny Transition Update. This is a paid service $5/mth but will probably last till the end of next year. Not sure if it would exist after that.
3) Use Fedora Legacy which is free but as usual not sure how long it would last.
Redhat ES would at least be supported for the next 5 years.

Even if progeny and fedora legacy does nto release updates you can always create updates from source. However if you dont want to pay the money for rhe, get redhat 9 and do a dist upgrade to centos.

If the RHEL comes with updates take that. If not get RH9 then upgrade to CentOS. There's a thread somewhere in the Dedicated forum that shows you how.

We install CentOS 3.3 now also no need to go throught the hassle of a RH9 > CentOS upgrade.
Thanks

No. They provide the server, it is UNMANAGED. CentOS is a Linux Distribution, the CentOS project is the one who releases the security upgrades and security fixes not LT.

Do centos, do not get an already outdated and legacy OS (RH 9)

I would choose the CentOS.

I notice a lot of cheers for CentOS. I personally use White Box Enterprise Linux. I think it's basically the exact same thing as Cent OS. The nice thing is you do updates via yum. Just another option.

You can use yum for CentOS update. It's just option how you update not part of feature.

I agree with Francisco. Tell your tech to check out CentOS, its just like Enterprise Edition. You will have problems with RH9 being secure these days.

I would personally go for whiteboxlinux, it's basically the EL release from redhat, it's free and updates well, and it should have a shelflife until 2008.
