View Full Version : An alternative to Cobalt Raq ?
Oscar Trimble 11-22-2000, 01:40 PM Cobalt seem to get quite good press in this forum but I have also heard some bad things. We are looking at the possibility of developping an alternative to the Cobalt Raq.
Is there anything you don't like about a Raq or anything you would like to see improved ?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Oscar
brently27 11-22-2000, 02:39 PM I am hosted on a Raq 3 currently. Now granted a RAQ is not a powerhouse server for site with tons a cgi and perl scripts, they do work very well with sites with static html and java scripts. My site is at http://www.fijivillage.com, I am also hosted with CT and they have some very good techs there to help you out.
Aptyp 11-22-2000, 03:23 PM Hey Brently
nice of you to plug their service ;)
Anywho... take a look at Plesk.com. They have a great control system. Beats the cobalt up and down.
but cobalt does have it's charm -> low learning curve and just enough of everything to keep me happy.

GeorgeC 11-22-2000, 04:06 PM I have a site on RAQ 3...it has no problems serving up lots of static html pages with SSI enabled. Throw in a few cgi functions, however, and my system admin immediately complains. Whether to go with a RAQ or Linux all depends on your site's needs. Not sure about the RAQ 4's.
AlaskanWolf 11-23-2000, 03:33 AM We are very seriously looking at the IOpliance.com
I think its called the Europa or some weird name. We have been using raqs since the raq1 came out
A good thing with the IOpliance is its upgradeable (cpu and ram) and it allows you to allocate subdomains for your vsites without you needing to do anything.
Chicken 11-23-2000, 11:46 AM Gary, the only thing with iOpliance is that I don't know ONE person using it. I'm sure there are people using it but none have come up on thi sboard when iOpliance was mentoned. Looks fine, but I want to see someone try it.
That might be you :)
MattF 11-23-2000, 01:57 PM How much are RAQ1?
mkaufman 11-23-2000, 03:03 PM Matt,
Just check out http://www.cobalt.com/ :)
Félix C.Courtemanche 11-23-2000, 05:29 PM RAQ4i and RAQ4r are getting quite decent.
a 450 mhz CPU with dual raid HD (for the 4r).
That is much better than the barely 300 MHZ of the raq3... not talking about the raq2.
I personally have used two machines by iOpliance and have not had any problems. The first generation machines (the ones that I have used) are just standard hardware available everywhere with a 1U case. The next generation machines are supposed to be great from what they have told me, and their control panel looks promising. I am an authorized reseller/partner (not that it means anything... yet), so if anyone is interested I can probably help you out, at least by relaying information to the appropriate parties.
Everyone have a great Thanksgiving.

I was looking for more input on these machines. I have a friend who dropped the RAQs because so many problems, which everyone agrees, just check out their downloads page for either raqs, theres bound to be more then 20 updates on each page, which if your new to a raq, you have to install each one.
So far, he said the only problem his come across with was a minor dns and pop problem, which the company fixed asap.
webfors 11-23-2000, 11:18 PM I'd like to see a working demo of the IOpliance. Although I am quite impressed with VDI's Cpanel3 and WHM interfaces. Much more comprehensive than the raq's interface.
I will try and make an iOpliance available for everyone to try with the new control panel. I'll contact my Account Manager at iOpliance and see if I can't get one of the new servers shipped to me, fully equipped.
If you are interested in testing the server out, drop an e-mail to me so I can contact you when I get the machine online.
AlaskanWolf 11-24-2000, 08:07 PM If you go to IOpliance.com and if their online (humanclick) ask them to go though their demo, they will give you the addy while your online
Its very fast compared to the RAQs when downloading all the sites if you have alot (like we do)
Its pretty easy in adding a site etc, Are they done with their own DNS instead of using webmin?
Chicken 11-25-2000, 09:59 AM Not sure webmin comes into this, but when I looked at the iOpliance CP screen shots, it was like a nicer design of Cobalt's CP (alsmost a carbon copy, they must have used it as a 'guide'). I believe they has the same DNS setup as the RaQs do. iOpliance boxes aren't cheap though. :( (But maybe that's a good thing :))
AlaskanWolf 11-26-2000, 01:33 AM Well, when I did the demo, they were using webmin.
As for the price, check it out again
The Europa II is acually 2 servers in one box (2 motherbo's 2 cpus etc) and if you configure that one with Linux and a P3 650 with 256 MB ram each, and 20 gig hard drives, it comes out to $3425.00
Now check the prices for a RAQ4i or even a RAQ3i...
As for the Europa, with 256 RAM (for some reason, they limit it to 256, when in the past, they showed as much as 1 gig as a option, i emailed them to claify this) and a 30 gig hd, with a 30 gig dig. tape drive, only runs you $2200
----------
As for a RAQ1, with max ram and hd, you can usually find one cheap for around $600 to $1000
