Hi,
well, Switzerland is where I live and I wonder if there's any reasonably priced hosting opportunities (dedicated or colocation) locally.
There will be Internet Expo 2002 in Zurich, February 6 - 8, I'll have a look around there but don't really expect to find something that fits my budget...

Of course there are hosting companies in Switzerland, too, but be aware that costs for bandwidth are much higher in Europe.
I am from Europe, too, but my servers are in the US. Speed is no issue, the difference is not noticable unless you do something like game servers or such.

Hmm... yes, I know...
But isn't it weird? I mean this is for a website project for a national (swiss) audience, so if I'd host with a company that has its own national network, there should be no "transit" traffic to internet, basically, it would all be on their own network, so why should this be so expensive, I just don't get it.
I still think it's basically a matter of negociating a reasonable price. There is really no intelligable reason why that bandwidth should be more costly locally than when I get it at the other side of the globe.
The reason I'm asking is, because my preferred solution would be to colo a server and have physical access to that box,...
I know there are some, but, as you say, they're all expensive and, for some reason, unflexible like hell. They usually want me to rent at least a 1/4 rack, nothing like 1U or 2U. Well, there are,... anyway, haven't seen anything I like, so far, I mean like RackMy.com or AffordableColo.com, but over here :)

You are right, it's a bit weird :)
But that's good ol' Europe. The market here is kind of different and has not so much competition. Less competition -> higher prices.

No, there is no way to keep all your traffic inside the network of a single company and everybody has to pay for traffic.
There is really no intelligable reason why that bandwidth should be more costly locally than when I get it at the other side of the globe.
Let's say I have a big file and put it on a server in the US and the same file on a server in Europe. If someone downloads the file from my server in the US I have to pay for it some $. If the same user downloads it from my server in Europe I will pay much more. That's it.

Grüezi!
http://www.genotec.ch/dedicated_hosting_conf.asp starting at 270 SFr (~150$) + 400 SFr (~280$) setup fee for a Celeron 900 256 MB Ram 20 GB HDD. Bandwidth is "unlimited" because they have flat fees with the providers. They have 3 x 2MBit at Cable&Wireless and are setting up an 34 MBit Ebone in mars (It'll be avaible in march '02).

Edit: mars = march, sorry for that. But is it really that funny?

well, I suppose it's because the line is capped. But like I said, they have flat rates, so they give it to the customers... (that's what they said to me when I asked them for..., but I'm quite a newbie at this game ;))
