Hi,

I have tried several times yo install a phpbb2 forum on my site using fantastico but for some reason although it installs i can't get into the admin panel as it seems to load so slow its almost like its timing me out. I can load Invisionboard (cant seem to get adminacces for this) and I can instal the Yabbse forum alright as well.

Id realy like to get the forum up and running but i cant understand what's wrong

Hi,

as i dont have a site running yet as it's under development I tried to create just a home page telling people the site was under construction and giving them a link to a forum i ws trying to install ( see the other post :D ) using the contol panel webeditor but it was late last night and I have managed to screw it up and when you log into my site you can just see an index with folder so what have i done?

I just did a test install using fantastico and I can't even get to my admin panel.

Did you try uploading the files via ftp and installing it yourself?

It could be an issue with fantastico or your host.

Download phpBB2 Here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phpbb/phpBB-2.0.10.zip?download)

Download phpBB from http://prdownloads.sf.net/phpbb (file phpBB-2.0.10.zip), unpack it, upload it and install manually. In cPanel create database for it. If you will have some problems then there are lots of tutorials on phpbb.com that will help you.

edit: Kalina was faster :)

I blame my late night Tim Horton's binge, coffee and donuts, too much sugar.

You have some great stuff on your site CA.

Our birthday's are pretty close.... just noticing! :D

FTP access and database info, that is if you set-up a database, I can do that too, but then I need access to the control panel. It's up to you.

You are using the default admin logins (admin admin I think but don't remember) that phpBB starts with? Then it just doesn't give you the admin link when you login with the default admin name? Or did you create an admin login during installation and it doesn't give you the link when you use it?
I've installed a bunch of phpBB's through cPanel with no problems. That's why I'm wondering exactly what is happening.

Installation with Fantastico is nice, but it will cause lots of problems. If he would want to add some style or mod he will need to upload files with ftp, and users who install phpBB with Fantastico have absolutely no idea how to do it so they will have to use default forum and 3 years old default forum style is very boring.

Better learn how to upload with ftp and install forum manually. Its very simple. There are lots of tutorials about ftp - do google search for "ftp tutorial".

Hi,

Im stilling having major roblems, firstly th install with fantastico would not work then kindly somebody from these forums installed the forum manualy and althought they could get into the control panel I for some reason can not.

I even registered for a free forum on one of these free hosting sites and although the board installed again I could not access the control panel.

Im assuming it must be my pc or some kind of setiing problem but I don't know what it could be??

Are you accessing control panel from link on bottom of forum page? If not then you should try that link.

To access control panel your browser should support frames because admin control panel is a frameset with navigation on left and content on right. Any browser should support that.

If that's not the problem, then what error message are you getting and what browser are you using?

That's what I was asking also. What is happening when you actually try the admin link?

While I agree with the previous post that FTP is necessary to know & use, a Fantastico or cPanel install of phpBB should work just fine and your installation can be easily upgraded to the latest version or "skinned" or whatever whenever you want. That's one of the nice things about phpBB is all the mods & skins freely available through their web site and community of users.
I would guess that somewhere you are just missing a step and making something normally very easy harder than it is.

Im using AOL as my browser and I don't beleive that i am missing a step.

I am accessing the link at the bottom of my and it just seems to reload my page again so I realy cant see the problem

So you are logging in as the administrator and you have the "go to administration page" link at the bottom but when you click it it re-loads the main forum list page?

If that is the case try using IE instead of AOL. AOL caches pages and you may not be getting the live page from your server. (AOL is notorious for causing problems with clients trying to administer web sites).
Try logging in through IE or Firefox (if you have it) and see what happens from there and let us know.

I just knew it had to be the AOL browser because I had no problem logging into your admin panel in internet explorer.

Glad it's working now. :D
