i have a large site with 300 forum members and hosturbo, as we all know..is TERRIBLE. its been down for 3 days and i'm finally ready to get a new host. i'm gonna start with hunthosting.com, but here is my problem...
i need to wait for hosturbo to start working again so i can go into the control panel and backup all my files to put on the new server....but what if hosturbo never comes back? is there any way to get my forum database? or am i screwed?
Well, I would say you we're screwed if they don't come back, but usually they do, eventually. I don't see how it would be possible if no backups remained.

the weird thing is...i got 5 sites with them (only 2 are mine but the other 3 i helped setup)...anyway, 4 of the sites are down but one of them is ALWAYS up
http://www.hotcorner.net never goes down
but...
oakball.net
gutsy52.com
thecollegepress.com
metmagic.net
all go down at the same time when hosturbo goes down, hotcorner does not...weird.

I know lots of hosts got screwed and I almost got screwed when my previous hosting company digi-wave went down. Check out their story http://www.actionjackson.com/articles/20010803.asp .
I lost 2000 images, but was lucky to backup my SQL Server just in time. Do a search on digi-wave on this Forum to read about it.
Good luck

If the host doesn't reply and the connection is alway down, you'd better choose a new host and point your domain there asap, and tell your members to sign up again.
One suggestion is to ask for some recommendations before you choose which host to use. Personally, I have never heard about the company you are going to use.

click the db you want to backup, then "View dump (schema) of database".
choose everything in the list, check "structure and data", then check "save as file", click "Go".
if you have telnet access,
mysqldump -uusername -ppassword dbname > dbbackup.sql
