Hi,
I have scanned through the forums and found a few bits of info, some good info, some confusing.

I think I have setup my Cobalt Servers DNS info properly but have a few questions that Im hoping someone here that has a cobalt raq can answer as far as dns goes.

Okay, here goes:

1. I hear that you can only have a primary dns on a cobalt raq server, is this true? If it is true, how do you get a secondary dns on the same server so that you can enter sites with NetSol as far as primary and secondary DNS info?

2. In my control panel, Network settings, I have the following information:
Host Name ns1
Domain Name mydomain.net
Primary DNS Server Address 208.155.xx.000
Secondary DNS Server Address 208.155.xx.001
(optional)
Default Gateway 208.155.xx.x

where x's are being presented here to hide the real identity.

Okay, now in netsol I have two dns listed
ns1.mydomain.net at 208.155.xx.000
ns2.mydomain.com at 208.155.xx.001

So, is this correct so far?

Okay, so now how do I go about entering the secondary dns info in my control panel of
ns2.mydomain.com at 208.155.xx.001
There is a drop down selection for secondary name service for network, but I have no idea if this is where Im supposed to be entering the ns2.mydomain.com with an ip of 208.155.xx.001 or not.

Usually I would just leave this alone, but I have had a few people comment (i.e. tell me) that they can't access a site sometimes that is stored on my server and other times they can, which leads me to belive in my unporofessional begginers mentality that the secondary name server of ns2.mydomain.com at 208.155.xx.001 is not operational and only some of the people can access the site.

I hope this is clear and that someone has step by step setup instructions on how to properly configure my cobalt raq server for both primary dns and secondary dns info.

Thanks ahead,
Bbox

Sorry guys, :(

I just wanted to discuss with Bbox the company who he's doing business with. It's not Cobalt related and just did not belong in this thread. I'll be more considerate next time, promise :)

Not really Colbalt related, but more DNS related. The point of Primary and Secondary DNS is in the event of failure. Putting them both on the same physical hardware significantly reduces the point of primary and secondary.

At the very least, primary and secondaries should reside on different hardware. In an ideal world, they would reside on different subnets, each contactable from diverse routes.

As a matter of interest, is it common practice for people to shoe-horn primary and secondaries onto the same hardware?
