View Full Version : Which name for my hosting venture?
Noldar 01-24-2002, 02:26 PM I'm planning on starting up a hosting business soon and can't decide on which name to use. I have two domains that I already have registered and I like them both, so maybe you can help me out. Here's some history on each of the domains.
Noldar Hosting (noldarhosting.com & .net):
I use the name Noldar Communications (noldar.com) for my part-time network consulting business. I also sell some long distance services under the name. I picked it because my original name, Butler Telecom, ran into some trade mark problems and I just happened to have noldar.com handy. I kinda like it, but I've had several non-geeks tell me it's weird. I've also had a few folks tell me they have trouble pronouncing it. Don't know why.
SJE Hosting (sjehosting.com & .net):
My handle on eBay is SJETRADING. I've used it for selling knives and some used computer parts. SJE are the first name initials of my three kids. It's less geeky sounding.
So, what do you think?
Thanks,
Richard

It's easier to remember and say. I think when it comes to using initials in domains, more than 2 is a no-no, unless those initials are meaningful like USA, NYC, IRS....
Ectoman 01-24-2002, 06:43 PM That's good, "IRShosting.com".. Crappy Support, and Audits every month..
I like the Noldarhosting.com more, it's easier to remember, as greggish said.
I guess Noldar Hosting sounds better. You already run a network consulting business using that name so you might as well expand it. Good luck.
perpetual 01-24-2002, 07:25 PM I agree.
Incognito 01-24-2002, 11:55 PM I do not like noldar...nolder...naldor....noeldar...for the name....
Just isn't easy to remember and is subject to misspelling. I like SJE only slightly better but only if the SJE stands for something people will remember.
I know most of the best names are gone, but I would continue to try possibilities. I just believe it is too important to be saddled with a name you might later regret.
Just one opinion though.
The one thing I did like about noldar was the common branding. So I might keep it and use it as well in relation to the other sites.
Still, though, I would try to find a more common, popular, general appeal name.
I wonder how many hosting companies are named with initials that mean nothing...
Good to see that SJE at least has meaning! :D
WoodShedd 01-25-2002, 01:27 AM What about NoldarNet.com?
Noldar enter into google came up first with noldar.com!!
If you're on a good thing, stick with it :)

Well of course... but of what use is that? Sort of reminds me of those search engine optimization firms that "guarantee" top ranking -- and the term they promise they'll get you a good result on is your company name! But come on... the only reason anyone would type noldar into google -- it being a meaningless word -- is if they already know the name of the company!
Honestly I don't think either name really offers much in terms of recognizability, and neither is particularly memorable. That you've used either name in the past is valuable only if you've developed some brand identity with either name that might be useful in marketing. That may be the case with Noldar, considering you do have some web presence with that name. If you're sold on using one of the two that's probably the way I'd lean for that reason, but I'd really consider looking for something else instead.
Good point of course JayC - meaningless words.
A topic which has been spoken many times before, what does 'google' mean, who thought up 'ebay' etc etc.

Noldar 01-25-2002, 09:51 AM Incognito,
A friend of mine that I was talking to yesterday just can't stand the name Noldar either. I asked him to come up with something better. He had plenty of great suggestions, but of course they had all been taken. He did come up with CoolCatfish.com though. I kinda liked it, so I registered it. I'm not sure how well it works for a webhosting company though :stickout
I also have Enigma Hosting registered, but my friend said it sounds too much like enema
Oh well......
lol
I'd say Enigma is better than Noldar
Noldar sounds far too "Star Trek" for it's own good :D
greggish 01-25-2002, 12:24 PM I'd go with PrimeHost.com, expired 1 year and 8 months ago, May 16th, 2000. I bet NSI will let that drop anyday now and you can grab it. ;) . Yeah, I know I'm a bit off topic here...but I can't pass up any chance I get to rant about NSI/Verisign. When is the gov going to get a clue and spend a little time going after them?
