View Full Version : I got Cobalt 4 and now what (Please help)
EnigmaBiz 01-24-2002, 01:29 PM I got a new toy that did not come with instructions and not so much as plug in play because of:
(Any suggestions or help is highly appreciated)
When I setup my server on www.serverrack.net they setup the domain www.enigmabiz.com as the default site. I will try to make sense here:
1. enigmanetworks.com <--- main site that sits on liquidweb.com hosting company
2. enigmabiz.com <-- is parked on mydns.com being forwarded to enigmanetworks.com. This became my main site due to short url.
3. I got a RAQ 4 at serverrack.net and got the following IPs from him: 65.170.79.187 and 188
Cobalt Settings
Control Panel --> Network
General Settings
Host Name: enigma-networks
Domain Name: enigmabiz.com
Primary DNS: 65.170.79.2
Second DNS: 65.170.79.3
Default Gateway: 65.170.79.1
Interface Settings:
IP Address: 65.170.79.187
SubNet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Under Site Management I have:
As a Virtual Site:
enigma-networks.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.187
I read an article on Interliant.com [Thanks to Chicken on WHT] and added the following to above Site Management:
ns1.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.2
ns2.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.3
Now I am not sure if I did that correct but I did follow step by step info based on: http://teamcobalt.interliant.com/pg_faq_setupdns.shtml
I would like to add a site called www.mp3bynet.com to the COBALT SERVER but nothing will work unless I transfer the ENIGMABIZ.COM domain to ServerRack and their DNS settings to? NS1.enigmabiz.com ns2.enigmabiz.com? Than the other virtual sites I add will work. As I mentioned the enigmabiz.com resides on mydns.com site and needs to be rolled over to serverrack.net's servers I just don't want to be down while the DNS changes and once they do I have my settings all wrong on my Cobalt.
I can upload the site I have right under root or upload it under a virtual site than make that virtual site the default but I am frekaing all out for not messing up the settings and have to call serverrrack.net and deal with it because they did their end of the bargain now it's mine.
Does anyone suggest a book on Cobalt or just merely web hosting etc. I can go to Barnes right now and get it.
I hope the above stuff makes sense.
skylab 01-24-2002, 02:23 PM yay for serverrack. they'll definately give you a hand if you need any help, just don't be afraid to ask if you don't know. they are good people.
so, you'll definately want to get a good book on redhat linux. there aren't any books i know of that are about the RAQ. the RAQs are extremely simple to manage, when i first started with mine, i had no experience whatsoever with linux. i read just about every thread on this here RAQ forum for a day straight and i caught on extremely extremely quickly. so, take some time, read up on all of these threads. even if you don't think that you need to read it.
BUT, first things first. start installing the patch files from the cobalt PKG pages. start from the bottom. go slow. when i got my RAQ serverrack had done MOST of the patches, but there were some newer ones that i had to do.

THEN, security.
read up on the security forums at rackshack (and here). WHT and the rackshack forum will be your best friend while setting up your server.

is a pretty good listing of some things to do and to install. you will DEFINITELY want to lose telnet and install the SSH PKG from the cobalt PKG pages.

I kinda did and I hate to bother them too much but they did help after I TOOK OVER THEIR SYSTEM and their DNS and all their traffic got routed to my site www.enigmabiz.com
I got called 2 hours or so after I messed around with the settings.
Making my own ns1. and ns2.enigmabiz.com binds with their IPS and such.
Check the settings above and see what I did. I felt bad. I dumb unexperienced never before used Cobalt took their site(s) down and re-routing their stuff to my site. I told them, isn't that suppose to not happen because of security issues. They told me they are fixing it.
So they removed the ns1, ns2.enigmabiz.com. Now I have to move domains using their ns1, ns2.serverrack.net

I have printed over 1,600 pages of RedHat 7.x linux manual from PDFs, and I just got a book 1 hour ago DNS and Bind. I zoomed in the past through the book and did not get much DNS help. That's why I got a book. Even the book is mostly apache and command line settings which I guess I can TELNET in the RAQ and do it. I WILL have to learn the basic and the history purpose of IP, DNS, Gateway names and put them all together, than go to Cnames, MX stuff and so on.

They installed over 24 security updates and it's all up to date. I will also keep an eye out because that's a least I can do if I don't know how to setup stuff :)
skylab 01-25-2002, 06:37 PM i can't stress how much this RAQ forum helped me when i first started out. without this and what little linux knowledge i now have, i wouldn't have "tamed" my RAQ. not that i have tamed it or anything. yet...
Chicken 01-25-2002, 10:01 PM Well of course :D Although there are some who might 'know it all', having access to 9,583 members, each who knows one little trick or tip, helps a great deal. Ok, so all 9,000 don't post in this forum, but you get the idea...

Chicken 01-26-2002, 03:26 PM Matt is redoing the about us page, which had the specs, I can't recall but from memory I think it is a dual PIII933 with 512MB of ram (again, this might be off as it is from memory and it may have been upgraded/changed since...)
EnigmaBiz 01-27-2002, 04:58 PM I managed to get help and thanks to him I have everything going and disabled DNS option on my RAQ. Now I am wondering do I need that to have MX Records working?
I use mydomain.com (as my ns1. and ns2.) and not ns1.serverrack.net.
Mydomain support ip pointing, mx, stealth forward, subdomaining which I don't need cuz Raq can do that for me. Catchall supports but I want the RAQ to handle all my email. All Mydomain.com does is catch email for aliases and forward them and if alias does not exhist it forward to whatever the master one is.
I wanted to be able to give access to users to create their own email addresses and such as soon as I give them their web site.

you can also search around here for DNS stuff. there are a ton of RAQ/DNS posts..

For me, definitely the stopping place for all things raq. Detailed step by step guides.
