Hello to all experienced resellers out there.

I have been reading up about reselling and doing some research on reselling hosts and I am now interested in becoming a reseller myself. The reason is (1) I will have more control over my own websites and I will probably be entitled to more features and (2) I will be able to earn some extra income by selling resources I do not need.

The only problem is that I have only recently begun attempting to build a website and I have knowledge whatsoever about html or any other programming language. Under these circumstances, would be wise for me to be a reseller and try to learn on the job? I would imagine that this exercise would be beneficial to me. Or should I seek out reselling hosts who provide technical support to my customers on an anonymous basis? Does managing hosting accounts require a lot of technical expertise?

Any advice on how I should start?

Thanks

It depends which way you're going. I mean if you're going to be selling to friends & family etc then your technical expertise doesn't have to be 100% and if any problems crop up, you can quite easily fire off an email to the company you're reselling from and they'll help you out.

If you're going to sell to the public though, that's a different story. I guess I could ask the question why are you getting into the hosting industry if you don't know much about it - sorta like becoming a sailor in a landlocked country :)

The bottom line is that any Joe Public could probably run a reseller hosting company, because if anything goes wrong you can simply rely on the knowledge of your supplier to drag you through.

But is this the RIGHT thing to do? I don't know...

If you're committed to it and keen to learn all the ins and outs, then yeah go for it. Start out small and sell to people who won't be so worried if it takes you a while to figure stuff out (friends/family/workmates) and eventually with a bit of hard work you'll reach the point where you know your stuff and can sell to the general public...

Just a few thoughts there anyway... :)

as HostIt says, start out reselling to friends and family......

If you have no knowledge at the moment, there is a lot of stuff to learn..............

However, learning whilst on the job usually the most beneficial way to learn. But just try not to do it at the expense of someone's hard earned monthly payments.......

I would recommend that you go out and buy a book on linux, HTML, PHP, network up a windows and a linux box at home.......and then get into it.......

OR...

You could out source your support to companies like hyper-techs... However, it may not be financially viable seeing as they have changed their priced since I last visited.

So... ummm... nevermind... hehe... :erm:

Didn't they used to charge $75/mo for 50 tickets???

oh well...
