View Full Version : GearHost - New User Issues
ride_bent 01-24-2002, 01:11 AM I am not knocking Gear Host (http://www.gearhost.com) but signed up yesterday with 2 accounts. I promptly received an e-mail notifying me that the sites were set up and I could logon and begin setting up and configuring my website.
(Natually DNS was not updated yet and that was understandable.)
I received a confirmation of my username and password for both accounts. (There was a seprate email for each domain account.) The username and password are the same for both accounts. (Is that an issue?)
Well, I cannot logon to do anything. The username and password are rejected. I tried the control panel, FTP access (using the IP sent in the e-mail) and they are rejected when I want to open a support ticket.
Am I being an ID10T and doing something wrong? One of the domains DNS has updated and now goes to nowhere.
Thanks in advance.
Jim

Blake 01-24-2002, 01:58 AM I too signed up with them yesterday morning, got a confirmation email, but couldn't use iControl, or access my site. I called and left a message last night, but didn't hear back from them. Sent an email late last night and hadn't heard from them as of this morning. Finally called their 800 number again, and talked to someone who had my account activated within 15 minutes. He mentioned there was some sort of glitch that caused new users accounts to not be processed. Your best bet is probably to try and get ahold of them on their toll free line.
Jeff Rambo 01-24-2002, 03:36 AM I've been a GearHost customer since December 8th, which can be verified by a simple search of the forums here. Anyhow, a few things need to be taken into account folks:
GearHost, as quoted by a previous member, is quickly becoming the preferred flavor of industry consumers. But before everyone throws a party and jumps on the bandwagon, you have to take into account that they are also a NEW host. This means they're still dealing with not only establishing their foundation, but improving it day by day as well. Taking on the amount of customers they're getting daily, which I'm guessing was no where near their projections, seems to be a bit overwhelming for them which is pefectly understandable for a new business; especially a new hosting start-up. While many of you are probably saying they should of planned for that beforehand, sometimes you can't always do that.
Just give it a little time, once you're locked on and wheels up you won't regret spending your dollars/pesos/euros etc. on GearHost. I haven't yet.
ochiba 01-24-2002, 04:27 AM They haven't even released all of their plans and they already have a list of customers who are signed up for them. Plus they are developing a control panel, not just for their site but as a product for other hosting companies.
I think that folks should try submitting trouble tickets instead of emailing them if they want a response. That *is* what they asked for customers to do. I've only had one delayed trouble ticket which took 4 days to answer, but at that time they were making it possible for me not to have to use their TT system for my request (which I prefer because I don't like dealing with support anyway).
Also, I don't recommend just moving a working site right away to their services until you are sure that you can run your site without problems. I've put up tests sites and am waiting for the *nix plan to come out before I move my main site or open another account with them.
I don't think they expected to become so popular so fast, and I hope that folks don't all bumrush their services and cause it to fall apart before it even gets started due to disgruntled comments in this forum.
I'm not trying to defend Gearhost, cuz like I said in an earlier post, I'm not going to sing praises until I have a fully working site. There are other hosts on this board who seem to have good reps as well, and if need be I'll sign up with them. But I think it's unfair to criticize all of their faults because they are a brand new company and there are going to be a lot of growing pains. At the price that they are offering (permanently) and all the features that come with that price, I think folks should have a little patience. And if you get worried, call them. I got really nervous about their *nix promise and I called them about it. Also, there will be a lot of new user problems considering that they are still developing their iControl panel which is supposed to handle most of the site configuration thingies (which are kinda vital for a new website); I've experienced numerous quirky iControl events. But I am not going to complain about them in this forum unless support stops responding to my TTs, emails, or phone calls. Which so far has not been an issue; they deserve the benefit of the doubt. But I'm not going to play the donkey and follow the dangling carrot either. As long as Gearhost is reasonably straight with their promised deliveries, I'll trust them. IF "this weekend/next week" becomes a mantra, I'll just haftta move on. It's not their fault, just my choice.
still waiting.
ochiba
p.s. I think their support is much better than many established webhosts.
pgkooijman 01-24-2002, 07:44 AM I agree with both statements. I have been with them for about 3 weeks and I have found them to be very helpfull. Ryan/DJ/Markus have done virtually everthing possible to get my sites up and running again. The times that responses through email were slow I tried support tickets, which always worked faster. If I really needed things cleared up, I just phoned them and that has worked out great all the time. They are simply very, very, very busy and have a lot of things going on at the same time. Judging from the times I call at (with the time difference between the US and Holland) I believe that guys at GearHost are working 18 hours/day or something and still are very, very busy.
While they are able to answer my questions and keep my site lightening fast for the price I am paying, I will also give them some time to get iControl and some of the other stuff working better.
ride_bent 01-24-2002, 08:25 AM As a Network Engineer who cut his teeth doing desktop support over 5 or 6 years ago, I do find it annoying have people try other ways to get suppost rather than through the proper channel. It does slow down the process and can result in less than average support for everyone.
With that said, I would file a support ticket if I could logon to the restricted support area with my password that is not working. It appears I am not confused as to how the logon process works at GearHost and it is a glitch on their half.
I also feel it is unreasonable for the comments of just wait a few weeks to be applied here in my situation. I just need to logon and get busy with my website. I doubt I will run into other issues as I keep things very simple.
I do appreciate the information from Blake about needing to call to quickly get it resolved. I will do that is morning. Thanks.
Jim
PS. I did not hear from my support e-mail for the past 8 hours. There wasn't even an auto responder letting me know it was received.
ride_bent 01-24-2002, 02:30 PM I finally got a break in my day to call GearHost and talked with Ryan. (He actually answered.) They corrected my accounts within an hour and gave me 3 free months of hosting on each account.
Ryan called me back several times and told me not to hesitate to call or e-mail him with my problem again. While I am a relative newbie to web hosting, I think they did a great job!

They will be up soon. Buy either one for $1,000,000,000.00 - hehe
(Heck, I even go 2 for 1 but for today only! :) )
chilediez 01-24-2002, 03:16 PM Thanks a lot ride_bent.
PS. If I buy both in the next 15 minutes do it get a free set of Ginsu knives?

RyanK 01-24-2002, 04:38 PM I just wanted to ease everyones concerns by a post. I haven't been on in a while because of some issues that have arised lately. As some of you know our billing system took a nose dive Saturday night, it would bill the customer and hand the order to iControl but iControl wouldn't create the account because it never recieved a correct set of instructions from the billing program, never the less over 150 accounts where created with this problem. Please contact us or email us at support@gearhost.com if your account has not be successfully recreated.
In addition the problem was also fixed on Monday so any new accounts won't experience any problems. Again, I'm personally sorry for this issue but it has been 90% corrected as of now, we are still working on contacting other customers.
How do you CHMOD files with GearHost. When I try it, using SmartFTP, it says it doesn recognize the commands
RyanK 01-24-2002, 05:46 PM I'm sure the moderators will erase posts for support so please email me or PM me.
Since you are not on a Linux server CHMOD will not work. To set permissions please use iControl -> Access Permissions.
Isn't gearhost a reseller for mediatemple.net anyway? That's what I heard. I am not sure though.
RyanK 01-24-2002, 08:11 PM Now that's about the craziest thing I've heard. No we are not resellers. We opperate two datacenters and our own equipment.
kmb999 01-24-2002, 09:02 PM When will we see the new iControl and *nix Plans?
RyanK 01-24-2002, 09:04 PM iControl gets a new build every day and uploaded everynight (these include bugs, issues, etc.) every weekend is when we upload new builds called feature builds that include new features into iControl.
ride_bent 01-26-2002, 12:15 AM I asked for FrontPage installed on my account. It didn't happen when my account was made yesterday. So today, I filled a trouble ticket and in less than 15 minutes, the problem was resolved. Nice support time! Thanks again!
Tesselation 01-31-2002, 12:03 PM I just signed up yesterday with Gearhost. Had no trouble getting my account passwords and uploading my files, but I haven't yet changed my nameservers, because when I go to the IP, the pages all come up a little _slow_ over a cable modem.
I don't think it's my connection because my old host (who I'm planning to switch away from) still loads instantaneously. I tested at about 6:30PM, 10PM, and 10AM, and there's been a discrepancy each time. Ex. 20 seconds to load a 398K Flash file on Gearhost vs. <2 seconds on my old host. I don't know what the standard is for throughput, but a 90% speed decrease doesn't seem like a good situation.
It's important because I have some fairly large multimedia files on the site. I'm an avid believer in the "10 second rule" and I try to design so that at least my broadband viewers won't have to deal with long load times.
Is there anything else that could be the cause? Does anyone know whether this congestion is something Gearhost is taking specific steps to address, or is it just their standard speed? Because if not, I'm sorry, you seem like a great host otherwise, but I can't use you.
If anyone wants to test/compare, my new IP is 63.123.146.38 and my old (current) site is at www.tessgadwa.com.

Didn't time it - but the IP version was veeeery slow on that Flash file compared to original from here (UK) on cable modem - though everything else seemed comparable.
I'm sharing your concern as I'm so tempted by GearHost that I might even try a Win server until unix is ready - though I'd do IP only as a test for while (I'm most concerned about how many changes Perl scripts will require)

vincentda 01-31-2002, 03:00 PM i'm not really complaining about gearhost b/c for the price of the accounts I'm happy with just the email and storage, but the download times are very slow.
I've had to wait up to 6 seconds on a T3 connection to view a 42kb file and up to 10 seonds on a T1.
My site with gearhost is expiredpineapples.com and the total images are about 55kb.
Right now, I'm just using gearhost to test b/c I don't have the confidence to host a working site yet but I do recomend getting an account with them b/c they do have a great staff, good looking website, cheap prices (!!!!), and a lot of potential.

uh ... there's no content on the media temple site right now. Just a place holder. It's creepy.
