Although php5 has been released I see that very few hosting companies offer it. Why is that so? Is it because it is new and relatively untested, or are there backward compatibility problems with scripts written for version 4? Is it expected to replace php4 as the standard version in the foreseeable future?

Most companies does not offer PHP5 yet, because it is new, untested, and most importantl of all not ready for live production use (according to the PHP website itself).

Because cpanel doesn't have a way to install php5 seperates via their gui/installer : - )
there is nothing stopping a host installing it say /usr/bin/php5 (cgi) and having a FAQ to show them how-to use it. Just most either don't have time or do not know how.

It's not only installing it but supporting people who want to test it. That's why we simply don't want to install it.

As soon as Cpanel support PHP5 you will see a lot of provider support it.

PHP 5 is not in beta, its current version is 5.0.2.
You should upgrade to 4.3.9. I recommend 4.3.9 for production environments and 5.0.* for testing and secondary offers.

Ok so your host upgrades to php5 and oh I dunno your Forum stops working all together. Now your 1 of 100 clients on that machine is your host supposed to downgrade back to 4.x because your forum isn't working??
See the issue? There is a lot of php based software that does not work correctly in php5 and that is because php5 is a new release.
Running bleeding edge most certainly is not the way to run a hosting company unless your just hosting a few sites for friends. When people pay for web hosting they expect everything to work all of the time and tend not to care why it doesn't work they just want everything UP and Working..
