XgroganX 11-20-2000, 01:47 PM Recently, I registered my domain name with NameDemo. The problem is that they put this large framed banner on the bottom of the website so it looks like some type of portal. Does anyone know a way to get rid of this? Can I cancel with them and register it with someone else? Any suggestions?
Also, can anyone recommend a good free web hosting service? Thanks a lot!
schweiz 11-20-2000, 02:14 PM I guess you are using their web forwarding service. A script like
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- Begin
if (window != top) top.location.href = location.href;
// End -->
</SCRIPT>
would get rid of frames.
You can always move your domain to other registrars but this wont solve the problem, 'cos as far as i know, there arent any registrars who provide free ad-less forwarding service.
http://www.portland.co.uk provides free domain hosting, inclusive of occasional downtimes :) You can do a search on http://www.freewebspace.net to find more free hosting services.

Hello,
NameDemo (http://www.NameDemo.com) is "jive". Probably took that name to mix up folks looking for "free" domain names into thinking they were signing up with NameZero (http://www.NameZero.com).
If you want to get away from NameDemo you may have to pay them $35 US. They have a page where they provide information about this after you log in
NameDemo.com allows you to upgrade your registration to a full-featured domain name registration, registered in your name, at register.com, inc. The upgrade fee is $35 and features free DNS service, 24-hour Customer Support and a free, 3-page Web site and email account, as well as various other services. This registration goes into effect immediately and continues for a full year after the expiration of the original NameDemo registration.
Be extremely careful about removing the frame without NameDemo authorizing it. If you read their Disclaimer (http://www.namedemo.com/copyright.cgi?1|2165936154|CO5769) & Services Agreement (http://www.namedemo.com/service-agreement.cgi?1|2165936154|CO5769). NameDemo may take your Domain Name for any reason anytime it feels like. It really is a slick way to take away Intellectual Property = Domain Name by offering Free Domain names.
My advice to you is Be Careful. "Pay" and do not "Play"[/i] with NameDemo or you may lose your Domain Name altogether.
Hope it works out for you.

schweiz 11-21-2000, 01:05 AM Right on.. I didnt check out their website b4 I posted. Now that I did, all I can say is.. its a damn scam. Interesting point to note, the website is brought to you courtesy of Register.com, ... no wonder the "upgrade fee is $35" phrase looks so familiar ;)
XgroganX 11-21-2000, 10:01 AM hey thanks for the insight guys - do you think that all of the "free" services are the same?
Generally speaking with domains, yes. With other free services, it depends on the revenue model which was implemented before the services were offered. There has to be some revenue coming in from some place, otherwise you'd be losing heaps of money per month. Banners, affiliate programs, etc. are just some of the ways to get that revenue back to cover *some* of the costs.
Wake up, nothing is free. See namezero.com? They charge money now because they didn't make any profit. Lucky I got 2 domains from them, hehehe :)
Chicken 11-21-2000, 09:18 PM Nam, do you mean DomainZero? Gee... I wonder how everyone could get all of these confused???
XgroganX 11-22-2000, 11:30 AM I guess it doesn't really matter- they are all the same

Hi I Am A,
I want to apologize to all I recommended "NameZero" (http://www.NameZero.com) to in the past.
I checked out what you said and you are correct. It seems now many of us have been sucker punched by them. It was $14 to buy the domain after 1 year, now it is $50.
It is just almost unbelievable, I found out about this price increase, not from an E-mail from NameZero, but, from a post on a forum.
Those who use the service know it it down more than up. I have multiple messages daily from the the NetMonitoring Services "Server Rat" (http://www.SeverRat.net) and "NetWhistle" (http://www.NetWhistle.com) to support what I say. Also, while browsing through "TheFreeSite" (http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Web_Space/index2.html), I saw an evaluation of the Service which also indicates there is a problem with down time. (Check near bottom of listings) We should pay them $50 for this???? :angry:
Just before they did this, they sent out E-mails offering to buy the .com, .net, .org extentions of domains a webmaster had with them to help celebrate how well they were doing. This of course was while the $14 buying price was still in effect. I have 2 domains with them I want to keep. Now instead of what I thought would be $70 to buy these domains, it will now be $250. (The .com extension was taken already with one of the names.) They are not providing grandfather protections from this price increase to those of use who signed up with them in the past in good faith, helped them grow and sang their praises so they could grow.
Looks like they will be going into the business of selling domains like Network Solutions.
OOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!!! I wonder if some consumer agencies, TV and Newspaper consumer reporters and District Attorneys would like to look into this stuff. Sounds like bait and switch to me.

i am a 11-22-2000, 03:53 PM hmm... glad i could... umm... help... :)
XgroganX 11-22-2000, 04:45 PM I registered with NameDEMO which I believe (although I can't be sure now) that they are a division of register.com. They charge $35 for full ownership with register.com. I am wondering if I should upgrade before they change that price!

Hi XgroganX,
Given what has happened at "NameZero" :sickface:, I suggest you should.

Hahahaha :D, lol, Chicken, thanks for correcting me, jeez, my mind goes confused these days, yup, domainzero to be exact, thx :D.
PAY for you domains at 000domains or weblaunching or whoever you like, just don't go with those suckers or you'll end up paying more and more. Cheers.

I agree. I understand that no company can "make it" by offering free domains, at least not for long, but when I signed up for Namezero it was $14 for a transfer. Luckily I signed up for the domain others might enter, and not the actual address for my site. It's more of a redirect than anything. But it does help for those who just like to type things into the browser and see what happens.
But, why should I *now* pay 50 bucks for something when the pitch was $14? I could pay $25 - I think it's 25, but I'm unsure - and have the higher level plan which allows me one transfer for "free".
I also noticed DomainZero hasn't been free for a little while now. They went from free to a test charge on your credit card to flat-out paid now - this is how it appears from their website.
FYI

Drivingmiss 11-28-2000, 10:54 PM LOL at that Namezero "reply"!
Hmm, sounds like they learned something about canned answers from the Netscape 6 team.
Maybe they read it off the back of a box of "Registrar Flakes" breakfast crunchies.
Bah! to Namezero!
