View Full Version : Anyone has recommendation for Debian Dedicated Server?
myleow 10-06-2004, 05:22 PM Can anyone recommend any Dedicated Managed Hosting that uses Debian? I have looked around and found that majority of the hosting services uses RH. I went over the Rackspace.com and they say if i want Debian then they won't support the OS, means i pay Managed fee for a Non-managed hosting.
If you have had experience with any good Debian hosting services, please post your recommendation and review.
Thank you in advance

RyanD 10-06-2004, 05:33 PM Just curious why you are set on Debian? For the most part debian is built as a end-user Linux hence why many DC's don't use it. Not to mention RH has an official support channel for the larger datacenters.
myleow 10-06-2004, 05:46 PM The reason that i am looking for Debian is because the development is done on a Debian server so everything is stable with Debian Stable.
I do not know if there are any bugs related to changing OS and thus using different PHP, PostgreSQL version.

bruce1234at 10-06-2004, 07:06 PM check out resellerworkz.com as i think they offer the debian os. i have a server with them (it has redhat tho) and they have been excellent!
We have a total control server at The Planet (http://www.theplanet.com) with Debian GNU/Linux 3.0. Servermatrix (http://www.servermatrix.com) offers Debian as well.
Perhaps you could consider purchasing an unmanaged Debian server and hiring someone to manage the server -- this would allow for more flexibility in terms of providers.
Celtyc 10-06-2004, 07:30 PM iWeb (myservernow.com) offers managed servers with Debian,
have a look at their site
wowtim 10-07-2004, 04:12 AM I wouldn't recomend using debian unless you have prior experience. If you do choose to Use debian make sure that all the necasarry packages are installed properly. It is very vital that the development packages get installed. After that your can just apt-get install any other things you need. Another thing you might want to check is the kernel and make sure its up to date. uname -a
Its ok if its 2.4 or newer.

Exactly the opposite: Debian is mostly a server OS. This is why the stable branch has been more stable than the Red Hat enterprise offerings.
Even a person who has never done server maintenance before can keep the server up-to-date and secure by periodically running "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade". Debian lacks a RHN-like web interface to patches, but you can subscribe to http://www.debian.org/security/#DSAS and get equivalent info.
However, Red Hat spends considerably more on marketing than Debian (who don't charge for the product and can spend exactly zero) and therefore will reach the newbies with more material than other distributions.
wowtim 10-07-2004, 08:54 AM I would have to agree updating debian is very easy. Its definately alot easier to upgrade a kernel on the debian OS. Has anyone here tried compiling there own kernel for redhat, with success?
myleow 10-07-2004, 05:40 PM What is the procedure in hiring someone to manage the unmanaged dedicated server? Is it paying per hour for tech support that is provided by the hosting company?
myleow 10-07-2004, 05:50 PM iWeb is pretty expensive

myleow 10-07-2004, 06:07 PM Serverbeach is the UN-Managed alternative to Rackspace. They do however offer Debian, unlike Rackspace whom i talked to and said that they would offer Debian as OS but you have to pay Managed price for un-managed server.
It is hard finding providers who offer support for Debian. When I was first looking around I found it pretty surprising but have since gotten used to the fact.
TMS and LayeredTech both offer Debian as install options and support it (some providers say you're on your own if you go with Debian or they charge extra as a custom os install), but they are still unmanaged services. When I signed up with TMS about 6 months ago they said they supported Debian, and although that they were not as experienced with it as RH they were learning more about it every day. I haven't actually had any of them actually do anything more than reboots on my Debian boxes, though, so I cannot really comment there.
Another option I was looking at was CyberWurx as they seem to run their own stuff on Debian. They offer unmanaged and managed solutions, and have a good reputation around here.
myleow 10-07-2004, 06:53 PM I just sent an email to rack911 asking about their hosting details.
I talked to TMS, they say they do half-managed support which only upgrades system OS and packages which i can do in my spare time. What i really want and insist with managed hosting is professional work done in times of crisis, but this is either through the roof pricing or does not exists.
I might reconsider TMS and i looked at iWeb, their Admin packages are too expensive for my liking.
I have a windows server with TMS, no complaints at all here, my server has never been down one second [In the week or so ive been with them] YIPES @ The Planet is extremely solid and the longest support ticket when i couldent reach jose LIVE on aim took 30 minutes, Im lucky this is my first server company and ive had such good luck.
myleow 10-07-2004, 07:41 PM I just sent emails to TMS, 15 minutes server asking for quotes. Will see what i get back from them.
I am guessing the best is still go with Un-Managed Dedicated Hosting and then hire Rack911 to handle server admin if i don't want to do it myself. One of the reason why i want to use Debian since its so easy to upgrade and maintain.
mikaelhg 10-07-2004, 07:55 PM I just got a Debian server from rackcheck. In Hamburg, I think. 100ms to the states, 30ms to my target market. :-)
