I'm not that much into network management, but would like to learn how to manage a network. And the first thing I'll like to know is what is all this about 1U and 4U servers. What are these?

Its a height measurement. 1u =1.75" 2u = 3.5" 4u=7" and so on.

Do they go up in set amount of sizes for every 1U increase?

Do these 1U measurements only apply to servers, for example, do they apply to hubs and that? I'm thinking of a rack.

Does a rack take servers and also hubs, routers etc?

Yes, you can install routers, hubs, and switches on racks....

Right... now...

What does a hub and router do?

A hub, is basicly a spliter.... A router is basicly a computer, it takes input from one network, and decides where something should go, it takes care of allocating IPs, subnetting, banning, its rather complex, but this should give you a good idea...

Thanks...

Could anyone suggest any good books about networking and also how do you suggest I get started in actually physically learning about networking?

Both connect two or more network or network devices. The difference (CMIIW):

- hubs (and some switches) work at physical layer (ethernet cables)
- routers (and some switches) work at networking layer (IP)
For completeness:

- bridges and switches (but see above) work at data link layer (ethernet)
- proxies work at application layer (HTTP)

Thanks priyadi. That got a little confusing, even for me, someone who knows alot about computers, LOL. But as I said, networking is a thing that I want to get into.
