Hi all,

I want to be a webhost and now I'd like to know what the profs suggest. Should I take a cobalt raq 3 or a ordinary linux server (if so, with what control pannel?? And I don't want to host in de VS or Something, So VDI and Alanez I won't use).

Thanx in advance!

Mostly depends on your end game plan. I would go with a normal unix machine personally but that is because I am pretty good with Unix. We use Freebsd as an OS.

Are you looking for a free control panel, to make one yourself or one that you purchase or lease?

I don't know much about linux, but I'm pretty good in programming with PHP/MySql, so I could make my own cp.

May I ask, why you host on an unix based system and not (for instance) on a Cabalt raq??

What are the main diffrences?

Are they both stable etc...

Is that U.S.? There are CP's you can purchase or lease, though the RaQ does a fair job with their CP as well. I'd say that most people don't use them for wide scale hosting, but some do, and they work just fine. Your level of experience plays an important role.

Yes VS is dutch for US.

Though what should you suggest for a starting webhost??
You said, my experience has to do with it, but when I'll never try something (more) diffecult, I'll never know how to use it!

So let's say, you are a person that wants to start a webhosting company. You have got enough money and you know a little about linux. And you know something about the cobalt os (from the demo of their website).

You know that PHP/MySql is going to be the future and you want a system on which PHP/MySql runs stable/fine.

Now you have to make a choice between:
A) a cobalt raq3
B) a linux system

What would it be? And please tell me the reason why.

Sorry for my bad English I'm dutch

Do you want to lease a server and a control panel from someone and get support for them?

Would you rather try and do it all yourself or with employees?

That doesn't matter me. I know enough webmasters of webhosting company's to support me if their is a problem, so that doesn't matter.

It's just what is the best.

Well, it seems as if you think you can poke your way aorund it or get help when needed, so I'd say the non-RaQ linux server. While RaQ's are good, they aren't the most powerful machine on the planet, and for the money, you'd probably do better going the other route.

I think it isn't a case of which one is better to start with, just which you feel more comfortable with. With either you have to know a bit about servers, and a CP alone never saves you from everything.

The RaQ's CP takes care of most functions, and there are similar CP's for servers that do the same. There are people on this board that could help you with either should a problem come up. Felix and War are quite knowledgeable on them. There are also plenty of people and resources for the other as well.

I'd say the choice depends on how much you and what you want to offer with your hosting service. The RaQ CP and admin isn't quite as customizeable as some other admin CP's, (but neither is plesk, so I hear).

If you are going to build one yourself, then the sky is the limit on that one, but it is helpful to know the system and software first.

Maybe you should start with the RaQ just to get things rolling (as it offers everything you'll need to start out), and develop your CP on a home computer in the meantime.

Great plan!

I think I'll do that.
Thanx all!

Well I know nothing about Unix and have never used a dedicated server before. I almost sure I'll go with catalog.com RAQ3 plan. Is that what I want considering this would be my first time admineristing a server?

Starhost,

As someone who started out in a similar situation, I think the Cobalt RaQ 3i is an excellent machine for beginners. It allows you to use the built-in features to start off, and gradually start tinkering more as you become more confident in your abilties. Cobalt provides excellent support, and the servers themselves are reliable (with the numerous patches installed, of course). If I were you, I would definitely start with one, and maybe buy a separate Linux machine later on.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanx all for your answers, now I've got one question left. Is it possible to setup a resseller plan for a cobalt raq, on which people can setup other domains??

simple answer:
not directly.

There is only 1 admin per server... thus you would have tot ake the requests from your 'resellers' in soem form and add the domains yourself.
