I'd ask them what their policy is on UBB, I'm sure they allow it, but the question is, maybe they section off those sites on a certain server, or have a policy in place regarding forums, etc.

Thanks
i'm quite sure that they allow UBB's, but I wanna know if they're good at that.

Most likely it will be fine, for at least some period of time. When running scripts like forums, you just have to realize that at a certain point, the script is too demanding for a shared hosting enviroment. When you're just starting out, it isn't an issue, but if the site gets hammered, it is going to hammer the server and you just need to be aware of the limitations that you provider has for people like you *wink* j/k

Well my small is kinda small, 170 members not all of them are activem it conciders small.

Yeah, if it stays relatively small, its okay, but you can't go over 300 members on a board or you will probably need a dedicated server.

But I can't afford dedicated servers, are you sure that they will suspend me after 300 members?
the trafic there is not high, and please help me decide if i'll register with tera-byte.com or at godaddy.com

As my preference, I usually register my domain with a registrar that is separate from my hosting service. It just makes it easier in the long run if you need the flexibility of switching hosts.

I can't speak to godaddy.com, but I've read good things here about them. I use 000domains.com which has been good for me. As always YMMV...

if you have UBB as a board, don't choose tera-byte, else they will suspend you without notice. We ran 2 board , and one is UBB 6.2 , and one day (on Dec) they suspended our website (without notice) for 2 days until I noticed it . Then they emailed us , and I had to run to chatroom and ask for why . They said, because we have cgi script, which were UBB, in cgi-bin , and this cost their resources, so they suspended us . Although we didn't use that board (not in active, but we just kept it for reference , because of alot of good old posts) , but they required us to remove, else we had to leave . I had to delete that UBB board and all posts .

Luckily we changed to phpBB2 when we moved to terabyte, else we had to DELETE ALL THE BOARD or leave .

So there isn't a host that alowed UBB's ??
what about gearhost, are they any better?

Well, GearHost has Windows Servers, so I'm not sure if UBB will function correctly because the path to perl is different than on Unix Servers.

When someone said above 300+ members need a dedicated server, did they mean 300 at a time, or 300 total?

I have 1500 members and usually 40-80 at a time, at times 100+. I just signed on at Tera-Byte. Will this be ok for me? I am using ikonBoard3 and will be using MySQL databases.

I am on their 4R plan, 25GB/400MB.

So Unix for UBB is better then NT ?
are tera-byte using Unix or Windows?

They have Unix and Windows accounts.

UBB works perfectly on Windows servers, just fyi - and it's easier to install on a Windows server too - no chmodding.

Yeah that's right, but i need to know if gear host will not suspend my board.

I can not really speak for gearhost but I will tell you from experience with a ton of boards, UBB is the LARGEST resource hog there is. You may run phpBB for a month and find you used around 2GB of bandwidth for that month, well UBB is almost double that being that it is flat file and everything is stored via HTML pages, where as phpBB uses MySQL to store all data to such as posts, members, threads, ect.

Again, I can not speak for any host in the long run, but as mentioned above, UBB is a resource hog and most hosts will get onto you if/should it get popular.

20GB transftr/month is not enough for UBB with 170 members?

Chicken

It isn't the transfer that gets you into trouble, if the board is hit good, the resources it takes up will potentially force your host to ask you to move to a dedicated solution.

Yeah, Chicken hit the nail on the head.

While all bulletin boards aren't that friendly on server resources, due to their nature, UBB and other boards that use the flat file cgi structure are far worse...

Well i emailed gearhost and they said taht they are hosting hundreds of boards and they promised that they will not suspend my site.
I dont think that all the sites that have a UBB used a dedicated host, it's too expensive.

Ive got about 1200 on my UBB and im on shared hosting;) And its Unix just in case anyone wanted to know;)

In all honesty tho I know my time on shared hosting is numbered.I've been thinking of switching to UBBThreads or Vbulletin.I figure a PHP/MYSQL board might help me stay with shared hosting a bit longer.I really like the staff at Infopop but the price of UBBThreads might drive me towards Vbulletin
