View Full Version : understanding something about colocation

Service
All per month.

64K $225.00
128K $350.00
256K $500.00
512K $600.00
768K $750.00
T1 $950.00
2 Mbps $1,375.00

What exactly does that mean. Lots of colocation providers don't even give mention to a price list by speeds like that. And some do. Are those possible speeds for my colocated server? Are they blocks of bandwidth? What is it. I would appreciate it if someone could help me understand this. Thank you.

Ebo!

If you take a rough average that 16k / sec is roughly 5GB / month that should help you along ;)

Cheers,

64k at full 24/7 for 1 month = 10gb .. you quoted fig. is wrong.

It comes closer to 20 GB, according to my calculations.

1Mbps is 316gb per month.

The long way :

64k * 60s * 60m * 24h * 30d
------------------------------------- = 19.775GB
1024*1024*8

The short way :

( 64 / 16 ) * 5 = 20GB

Both slightly inaccurate....but a good enough indication....

Uh try my calculator...

http://www.game-mods.com/datacenter/bw.php

Just enter megabits per second and it calculate gigabytes transferred per month.

Wow. I'll have to bookmark that. :)

<form action="bw.php" method="post">
Enter Mbps ( 64 Kbps is .064 ) : <input type="text" name="bw" maxlength="50" size="30"><br>
</form>
<?php
$abw = $bw/8*60*60*24*30;
$jj = $abw/1000;
echo "GB transfered in one month : $jj";
//Coded by Tetraboy

They'res the sourcecode if anyone wants to keep it for some reason...

i meant to post here to say

i was wrong .. and i'm sorry :eek:

I will remember that in the future ...

But it wasn't my fault .. i was told ages ago that 64k was 10gb .... oh well ... at least i know now ...

Shouldn't that be 1024, not 1000, since we are dealing with binary digits. Also "64 Kbps is .064" should be "64 Kbps is .0625" for the same reason :)

Well yes....but if you want to be that accurate, you wouldnt multiply by 30 either ;)

Its an accurate enough estimate!

Yeah.. Its a good enough estimate. If not modify the code.

they are not referring to speed they are referring to transfer rate.
bandwidth breakdown

64kbps 20.5 gigs
128kbps 41 gigs
256kbps 82 gigs
512kbps 164 gigs
1mbps 325gigs
2mbps 656gigs

this is not how much bandwidth they give you a month this is how much band width you would use if you transferred at that rate non stop 24hours a day for one month

but is this burstable bandwidth ?.

if not then i can imagin the speed of server with 64kbps connection. :D

Is 128 burstable to 256 for $500 set up and $340/mo decent?
