View Full Version : Connection Help
cdudeuk18 01-20-2002, 02:42 PM Hi ,
Our current NOC has 1 internet connection ( cogent 1000mbit )
We however need more connections to provide a higher level of availability
Which of the following is the best in your view
Time Warner
Savis
Qwest
Verio / NTT
Easynet
Above.net
Level 3
Carrier 1
Nextra
XO
UUNET / MCI / Worldcom
AT&T
C & W
Sprint
Verizon
Yipes
Please note :
a 1gbit ethernet provider would be great but can't find any info about it from any of the providers.
If you are looking for a Gigabit ethernet connection, like the one you have from cogent, then you could take a look at http://Yipes.com they are relatively good and inexpensive...

We'll be looking into yipes ... but how much is 1gbit for business ???
Also ... we MAY go for a 2nd Cogent 1000Mbit connection if they let us.
I have no idea on what Yipes's pricing structure is, but you can surely contact them for that one...:)
on a different note, if you are looking for a quality backbone, then UUNet or Sprint is the way to go

Hmmm
We need 1000Mbit or above
Reason :
We'll be providing 60gb to every reseller , 60gb and above to every dedicated server users , 6 - 30 gb to every hosting users
and want a fast network with 60% bandwidth available at all times.
and UUNET is out of our price structure for bandwidth and not enough bandwidth
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 04:13 PM UUnet
C&W
Genuity
Those 3 have been around the longest and have lots of routes around the world.
Sprint
ATT
Those 2 are newer (to having a backbone ) but are doing good.
Level3
Qwest
Verio
Time Warner
Yipes
Are all cheaper provides, Qwest and Level3 probably the best out of them. Yipes is good also.
After those the lower the price the lower the quality. You get down to cogent which is real low quality.
And that's all in my humble opinion.
and a suggestion to you cdudeuk18, you shouldn't use cogent and just cogent alone...
you should have atleast one good tier 1 provider, because and the moment cogent isn't that reliable.
cdudeuk18 01-20-2002, 04:26 PM We've had no problems ...
but we just want to have more bandwidth available .. and from different providers ...
We're looking into getting a DS3 to VERIO and a 1gb link to Yipes
ADD < whats the url to Genuity ??
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 04:27 PM http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32411 ( Qwest )
They are several sprint reps here at WHT too you might talk with, though their chat with a specialist is pathetic. ( ok on their website they brag about they're bmans yet they're specialist doesnt know what they are....... )
http://www.globalcrossing.com/xml/services/serv_data_ded_int_acc_spec.xml
http://www.level3.com also offers Gig-Es
http://www.internap.com/products/ethernetconnectivity.htm
Those are the ones off the top of my head.
i know for a fact that sampson88 works for Qwest, and he offers some pretty good deals now and then here at WHT...
cdudeuk18 01-20-2002, 04:32 PM ((( That Qwest DS3 for $11k a month seems good .... and what we need ....
Additional Global Crossing seems good ... a DS3 from them may be a good investment .... ))) - possibly
Internap seems good ... 100mbit or 1000mbit maybe good from them .... probally get that instead of DS3.
So 1 x DS3 connections [ maybe ] and 2 x 1000Mbit .... i think thats about as much as we can currently afford to invest ....
We'll be contacting the relevent parties to discus terms and fees .... as soon as possible .. i hope to announce the iminent opening of our company / site / network ...
Thanks for your help.
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 04:35 PM Personally that makes no sense to me.. As you're still only going to push at max 75Mbps safely.
cdudeuk18 01-20-2002, 04:44 PM We want a extreamly fast network .. and to be able to provide additional transfer @ $1.50 per GB.
We probally will only use around that amount ... but i would prefer to go with 2 x 1000mbit connection .. than 1 x ds3 and 1 x 1000mbit ... cos the ds3 would cost alot of money.
what Tetraboy is saying is correct...
You are going to purchase bandwidth almost equivilant (*sp?) to an OC-48, and even etremly large hosts do not even utilize a full OC-48. My point is I don't even know what company you work for that requires 2.045 Gbps of bandwidth?? You'll be spending extra money for un-needed bandwidth.

We' don't want to remove account because they are using alot of bandwidth at one time .. because some will .. with having a ds3 .. that limits us to 45mbit .. and also will take a huge chuck of money out of our budget ... as where the 2 x 1000mbit will not.
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 05:00 PM Do you understand how much bandwidth 1 t3 is? At 30Mbps used capacity from uunet it is still only $1.50 per GB to you. Even though shou shouldnt push a t3 full but running full all the time a t3 can push 14,200gigs per month. While a Gig-E can push 316,000gigs. You'd be best to start out with 2 or 3 t3s.
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 05:02 PM BTW are you sayings GIg-Es are more expensive than t3s? I know of no Gig-E even from cogent cheapert than t3s. T3s are on average 15k Gig-Es would be terribly expensive from non cogent.

We were quoted $24,000 for a DS3
We cannot tell you how much we pay cogent as that is private , but i can tell you its alot cheaper ... as for the other 1000mbit ethernet provider ... we'll be talking to them to ...
The 1000mbit connection is up and running .... we just want 1 more for more reliability ...
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 05:08 PM Cogent is normally around $20,000 for a Gig-e May I aks who told you $24,000. UUnet is only $14,000 for a Ds3.
about the ds-3, talk to sampson88, he quoted me on a Qwest ds-3 for about $11,000/month plus loop...
And another thing, may I ask what's the site of this company you are working for??

We do not pay $20,000 per month for our cogent connection
and we were quoted $24,000 by a advisor.
We have already agree that ds3 connections are to expensive for what we will be using.
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 05:16 PM If you know so much why are you asking us for help?

I'm working for a man who is currently in the proccess of creating the company dedicated towards this project.
There is just me and him at the moment.
The money is coming from investment from his own company.
I cannot disclose much information at the moment - because its all hush hush ... however i will answer any questions via ICQ.
Tetraboy 01-20-2002, 05:19 PM Ok, I have added you to my icq/aim list but I don't see you on.
