View Full Version : More Bandwidth Required
themonkey6 09-27-2004, 10:05 PM My server loads just fine and things are great, the only thing I need is more bandwidth. I am about to cross the 1000 GB barrier with my current host for this month and I need a solution fast.
My current host doesn't allow me to purchase more bandwidth, and the only way to do this would be to buy a new server and have them share the bandwidth. But I'd rather not do that because I'll have to continually keep adding more servers as the site grows. Simply put, I'd rather manage one server than five.
I have found two places that offer lots of bandwidth and want to know what you all think of them.
Techiemedia.net offers an unmetered 100mbit connection. Every 1000 Gigabytes used will cost $125. But what's the point when Ev1servers gives you an automatic 1000 gigabytes with their $99 servers?
OKTAGONE.NET offers 2000 Gigabytes for $105. It's on an unmetered 10mbit connection not 100mbit.
I'd rather have a 100mbit connection so that at peak times things are still loading smoothly. Does anybody know of a place that can offer lots of bandwidth at a cheaper price? Would $40-$50 per 1000 Gigabytes be asking for too much?

I am guessing you are with managed.com?
Most providers will allow you to go over the 1000gb limit (or whatever bandwidth you have purchased). I don't think you are going to find an additional 1000gb for $50... but good luck.

f0urtyfive 09-27-2004, 10:17 PM If your doing more then 1000 GB+ your only real options are to buy more dedicated servers or go to colo. The reason they dont let you buy more bandwidth usually, is they want to discourage people getting to 1000 GB (They sell it expecting you wont ever use that much, so once you go over they hit you with massive over-use charges). Usually anybody that will give you a 100 mbps connection for a sole dedicated server is a bad idea (ETC, All their customers have 100 megabit drops on a 100 megabit switch on a 100 megabit router port. Network gets flooded very easily) IF they're so easy to give you a 100 megabit switch port, make sure their uplinks are 1000 meg.

If I'm simply going to be using the server for downloads and nothing else (no script execution, etc.) does it matter much what kind of server it is or how fast it operates? I should just go with the cheapest priced one should I not?
The best price I see is managed.com for $70/month and you get 1000GB transfer on it. It's a
Intel Celeron 2.4GHz
512MB DDRAM Memory
80GB EIDE Hard Drive
1,000GB Data Transfer
What's a co-location? It sounds like I'd have to goto the location and do my stuff there? Can anybody explain please.
CactusCounty 09-27-2004, 11:07 PM Co-location is when you purchase the server and then have it housed and connected in someone's data center. You provide the box, they provide the connection and bandwidth.
themonkey6 09-27-2004, 11:25 PM First of all, thanks to all those that have replied thus far and helped me. Thumbs up to all of you, your help is appreciated.
Now getting back to topic, I'd rather not do co-location. Using a dedicated server would be much better suited for me.
Does anybody know of any dedicated servers that are less than $70 per month and give you greater than or equal to 1000 Gigs of transfer? The CPU speed or RAM doesn't matter at all.

Do you have a CP preference? Would you want to pay a setup fee to lower the monthly payments?

Ensim or Redhat is preferred for the CP but doesn't matter too much.
Yes I would be willing to pay a setup fee to lower my monthly payments. I also want no obligation out clause incase my traffic reduces and I can't afford server costs anymore.
Thanks auctionSuite :)
CactusCounty 09-27-2004, 11:55 PM Psssst! Redhat is an OS.
If you don't mind DA as a CP, and can drop $99 for setup, 15minuteservers.com has that little Celery server for $69 a month. $0 setup is $79 a month and $199 setup leaves you with a $59 a month payment.
There are other places you can get them in that range, but I've had very good luck with my server from them and don't hesitate to recommend them. Quick support that actually understands what's going on is a major plus too.
IHNjustin 09-28-2004, 12:33 AM You need to find a company that will offer you with dedicated servers as needed, and aggregate the bandwidth for you either by 95th percentile, GB delivered, or any other billing method. This will allow you to grow while maximizing the efficiency of your resources. For example, with this model you don't need to purchase additional servers just to use more bandwidth. You will be maximizing the resources of the server while getting as much throughput as necessary. Feel free to PM or e-mail for suggestions on providers that could fit your needs.
