DirtyRider 09-27-2004, 05:22 PM Very cool deal, will you be having one anytime soon for the other servers?
total_assault 09-27-2004, 09:30 PM Common! wheres the Raid? Please!
BeasTboyz 09-27-2004, 11:03 PM How about if we do pay the setup fee and get it for $200 a month?

Very cool deal, will you be having one anytime soon for the other servers? You have to check back every Monday and see what the new deal is. That's the way the game is played... If you like it, you need to bite that week. No telling what is coming next week.
Marco JKD 09-28-2004, 12:56 AM I am also waiting for a 2800SR special.. :(
AbbasJaffarali 09-28-2004, 05:49 AM Is it possible to create a "Software" RAID 1 using Windows 2003 on this server?
YourHost 09-28-2004, 01:22 PM This special already includes the normal setup fee being waived to get this monthly pricing. We cannot reduce the price further for an additional setup fee.
We do not install or enable software RAID on these servers.
trillionth 09-28-2004, 02:32 PM Software Raid 1 under Windows 2K3 is simple to configure on your own, no need to involve ThePlanet to accomplish this.
Goto disk mgmt and convert the basic disks to dynamic (this will require a reboot) clear all partitions off the second drive (or at least enough space equal to the partition(s) you want to mirror) Once converted to dynamic, go back to Disk mgmt and right click the partition you want and choose 'Add mirror' repeat for each required partition.
W2K3 will create the mirror in unallocated space on the chosen drive and synch the mirrors automatically.
my_forum_id 09-29-2004, 07:58 AM If a software RAID drive is created in that way is it bootable ?
i.e. if the main drive failed you could ask TP to swap drives and reboot ?
I read somewhere that this isn't the case - I wondered if you have practical experience of this ?
Ta in advance . . .
AbbasJaffarali 09-29-2004, 08:11 AM Also wondering- does software RAID effect the performance marginally or by a whole lot- say on the above server.
Thanks
trillionth 09-29-2004, 10:46 AM Yes SW RAID partitions are bootable.
When setting up software RAID under W2K3, you get an additional boot option of booting from the second drive, as long as you have terminal access to the box (i.e. via DRAC) then you'd be able to select this. No swap is necessary.
Note that when a drive fails, Windows will continue to run from the mirror. Any further hardware failures will result in complete loss of data. At this point you would need to get the second drive ordered. When TP is ready to install it, shutdown the box, replace ONLY the failed drive and boot. W2K3 will rebuild the new drive. Until the rebuild is complete, your data is still at risk.
AbbasJaffarali 10-01-2004, 12:13 PM I went ahead and got one of these servers and so far, it seems great. I am trying to use the Software RAID functionality of Windows 2003 and I first converted both the drives to dynamic. I then right clicked the first drive and selected the "Mirror" option and selected the other disk.
It did convert the disk to a mirror and is currently sunchronizing data, however, I got the following error- any idea why and what I can do:
"logical disk manager could not update the boot file for any boot partition on the target disk. Verify your arcpath listings in file boot.ini or through the bootcfg.exe utility"
I havent installed ANYTHING on this server- this was the first procedure I did on this box so it rules out the possibility of another application interfering
Thanks
Abbas
tokios.com 10-02-2004, 12:43 PM From my personal experience. They are not directly bootable by default. You have to issue a command to make the second drive bootable using the boot cds
Also, whenever you have a crash (ie not a proper shutdown). The system resyncs the mirrors during which time the entire performance of the server becomes very sluggish. And do take note that the resync can take hours depending on your setup
I know this probably does not apply here, but i would personally recommend that you look into an option with hardware raid. I recall reading some where that was indeed offered as an option for an additional monthly fee at TP
Cheers
thehostingsupport 10-03-2004, 03:38 AM Do you offer RVSKING and Fantastico with this package?
-- Jason
PeteCassetta 10-03-2004, 07:43 AM Fantastico is free with ThePlanet and ServerMatrix servers, but they don't offer RvSkin at this time, to the best of my knowledge. You have to license it yourself. It's good to ask, for if enough people ask, I'm sure they'll take the request seriously.
