I know Ventures Online is performing a data center move today, but does anyone know how much longer it will take or any other info?

They're planning to do a routing switchover halfway during the move (which is supposed to be roughly 10 hours total). Provided everything's on schedule, since the move started at 6pm ET, should be about 11pm ET for the switch.

The idea is that nobody will have more than 5 hours of downtime.

my server is creeping pretty close to 5 hours :-/

I have one of my servers up, so things are definately progressing. The rest are still down, but at least we know the new network is running fine.

They are moving the servers to a new NOC.

My server has also almost reached the 5hour mark, though it is somewhat comforting to know that at least some of the servers are up.

Hmm,

I still don't have my other servers up. Once the first one came I thought for sure the others would follow shortly as they are in the same rack.

My box is up but I can't SSH or get to it. Apache isnt working either.. All sites are down.

Try doing ssh to your IP address. That should do it. If bind has failed, your url won't work, and the *.vosn.net addresses are still down.

Backup.. Had to login to WHM via IP, restarted all the services and back up... 5 hours and 30 min later.

I've got 4 up now, so we are getting closer.

VO was up for a little while but now i can't seem to get to any of your sites, or theirs again???

My server came back up roughly after five and a half hours of being out. None of my services were working, but a quick login to WHM via the IP address and restarting them, and things were back up.

Pings seem to be a little faster, though I've already seen some reports of pings going the other direction slightly from the short time the VO forums were up. So, your mileage may vary. ;)

I try not to worry because I know we're in good hands.. but just knowing that its over the max time they said any one server should be down.. and added that their site isn't working anymore either.. just makes that olcer(sp?) I formed a few months back worse. :eek:

They must be having some kind of technical problems tonight.

Their site just hopped back online and ran great for about 3 seconds and is now gone again...

I want to personally apologize for the extra downtime, please note we did run into a few technical issues and a slight backlogging of servers, however, we are working as fast as we can to resolv them and get all servers back online. Once everything is up and running I will personally run an investigation to find out what went wrong and why and make a announcement to our customers. Again, I do apologize about this, but please know, we are working as fast as we can to get everyone back online.

Thanks Dan for reassuring us that nothing really horrible has happened.. you know.. I keep seeing that image of the van going down the road and the servers falling out (from the post at the VO forums).. give me nightmares! :crying:

H2, just because IP's are close togther in a range doesn't necessarily mean the servers are close to each other. Were working as fast as we can thou. Again I do apologize.

Oh good it's not just me... when the VO site went back down I though, oh nooooooo...

Do I understand that restarting Apache must be done thru root? I am on the Venture shared server, haven't even tried the IP thing but figured there's not much point since I am not root. :)

While we're all sitting here on pins and needles, may I ask, of you VO dedicated customers, is the Dedicated Server Quick-start guide pretty complete for starting up as a Dedicated?

Why does VO move so often... If they run out of space, can't they just rent another suite from and put new servers there and leave the current servers intact.

(disclaimer: I don't know why they are moving tho :) )

They are moving because the Verio center they're in is closing down.

From what I have read, it seems VO have been a little unlucky - they signed a new deal with Verio to get more rackspace only to find out Verio is closing lots of datacenters - including the one they use...
By moving to their own facility, this should be more permanent....

but they have been very supportive of all clients till date...

Ask around VO clients... even I myself would like to extend my gratitude for their professional conduct and excellent quality of support shown by all VO staff, not just one or two who get things right while the rest slacks... no, they have a very dedicated and capable team doing what they're good at! :)

No wonder it doesn't make me jump in shock whenever I see a much lower priced competitive equivalent service offered by people here in WHT... coz I'm satisfied with the level of support I get, knowing that the services are backed by top notch personnel and not by a fly-by-night company. Don't mind paying the lil extra, seeing how stable VO is growing! :)

Kudos to everyone in VO and everyone who's a fellow client who stand by VO during such moments! Give yourself a pat on the back! :)

Rackshack provides MRTG graphs.. Be nice if all providers did that.

Well, there's really not much to hide, I figure it just confirms the size of our firm. Currently were pushing roughly 70-75mbps @ peek with a 95% average of about 68-69mbps. Not too terrible considering we have over 200 servers in the network now. Althou, i'm sure it would have been higher, Verio closing caused many plans to be put on hold and towards the end server sales to be stopped.

Which lines are you running that over right now? Are you running primarily through the time warner line right now or no? Thats who I usually get on traceroutes. How are they treating you guys stability wise?

Due to the peering that timewarner has at the moment about 80% of the traffic is going over it rather than the other Gige from Yipes, but we'll take care of that when we get the routing more customized. As far as service they've been great, and as far as reliability we shall see, however, thats also why we have no less than two lines and will be adding a third in the near future.
