OK. Over at shellcity.net, we've been having a pretty lively discussion on which are good host services for me to use (first time). The leading suggetions were:

aletia.com | phpwebhosting.com | hostsave.com | gearhost.com

I have seen a few remarks about 2 of these 4 here, and so far, aletia.com seems to get the best response I've seen with the relatively light searching I've done. I'm hoping for a little help finding a host. I want 150+ space, 5+ gig transfer, cgi and perl support, and I have been recommended to look for mysql support, though newbie that I am, I have no idea what for.

I also want the lowdown on adult content. I intend to display artwork, mostly of a nonerotic nature, but some using quite adult imagery. I have no intention of displaying porn or any art that is designed for sexual stimulation, but some of it will definitely be disturbing and graphic. I think I need to observe decorum and legalities. Whaddya say.

It is really at the discretion of the hosting company to decide whether or not your art is acceptable under their TOS. I think that if the site does not have an adult site feel then it should be fine. But you should probably ask the various hosts directly about their acceptable use policy.

I have heard a lot of good things about aletia in here. The others I am not sure of as I haven't seen anything. :cool:

Agreed and your best bet (if you are concerned) is to email a few samples to a host and explain what it is (or what it isn't), and the type of site, etc., and see what happens. For the most part, I think the non-adult limitations are mostly geared towards porno sites, not artisitc sites, but better be sure than sorry (and lose money over TOS violation, etc.)

Don't actually email file attachments to the potential hosts - email a link to them instead.

Might sound obvious, but you'd be surprised how many pics we get sent to us ("is this acceptable on your servers?"). :eek:
