View Full Version : AOL to Buy Red Hat
allan 01-19-2002, 10:41 AM http://www.washtech.com/news/media/14759-1.html
I guess this means that we will all be receiving several Red Hat 7.2 CDs in the mail every week if this happens :D
alchiba 01-19-2002, 10:46 AM Every time your server boots up you'll hear "You've got Linux!"
Yup. It's the end of the world as we know it. :D
Nat_RH 01-19-2002, 10:50 AM Similar to Netscape...another great thing will be destroyed.
Let's look on the bright side though....no more downloading
Linux upgrades, AOL will include a CD in every magazine and
you will receive one in your mailbox at least once a week.
This would be a sad time for all of us....
:D Just my humble opinion...:D

Lets hope that Red Hat will be taken off of the free list, and made into a Windows type deal where you have to pay $500+ dollars for a server key.

JustinK 01-19-2002, 01:43 PM Nooooooooooooooo! They'll kill it! They have the touch of death they do...
Steve Case recently bought some property behind the hilton in Kauai. So until the island sinks you can hunt him down there probably to complain. ;D
Maybe it is a good thing... we get to use AOL's lovely support line!
AOL/Redhat Support: "Hello, how can I help you?"
ME: "The redhat software cd you sent me is defective."
AOL/Redhat Support: "Ok, can you first explain to me what 'software' is?"
MarcD 01-19-2002, 01:47 PM sigh
u all think those little cds we will be getting are a good thing
nope
think about it
you got your new aol redhat 7.2 cd
u got er installed server up
everyones viewing your site when BAMMM
your 45 free hours are up please call an aol represantitive to activate your membership
Do you guys think that Steve Case will blow off his ties with Microsoft and start distributing the software? I wonder if this is another business agreement with Microsoft like Netscape was. I mean think of it, AOL purchases Netscape and then uses I.E. for their AOL 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, etc. Meaning that Netscape is not being used by many.
Also, Windows XP comes preloaded with AOL 7.0 already in it. I mean come on, its almost like AOL and Microsoft have been purchasing these companies to smash the competition. Watch, Red Hat will probably get really crappy (like Netscape did) and then people will start turning to Windows-Based Servers.
Just my 2 cents.

davidb 01-19-2002, 04:24 PM It could be worse, MS could buy RH. Mabey now more people would use FreeBSD :)
Tetraboy 01-19-2002, 06:24 PM Relax, They'res still Slackware and Debian.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JeremyL 01-19-2002, 07:08 PM While most of us are looking at this from a server point of view, if AOL buys red hat it could bring linux to the next level for desktop users. You might start seeing Linux shipping on many more desktops bundled with AOL on retail shelves.
But yes I believe this will hurt the server end of things.
joe52 01-19-2002, 07:17 PM And I was about to buy a copy of Redhat 7.2 instead of downloading it just to support Red Hat. I guess I can forget about that now. I'd just as soon not support AOL.

Well there is also SuSe and Mandrake Linux. Indeed, I find Mandrake Linux distros to be of better quality than the RH stuff.
And having some competition to Microsoft on the desktop can only be a good thing.
And finally, it was Microsoft, not AOL, who cut off netscape at the knees. Do you really feel comfortable with Microsoft at the controls of the Internet's oxygen tent?

I seriously doubt it, because everyone thought that Netscape would improve so much when AOL bought it, and everyone thought that AOL would replace the older I.E. with Netscape in the AOL Software. But, look at what happened.
Jim
This was so obvious to happen. RedHat is a sell out. RedHat is not even stable no more like it used to be.
DHWWnet 01-19-2002, 09:21 PM nOOOO!:flamethr: i'm already used to R.H and starting to know it by heart :\ anyways, there are other alternatives when the time comes to move to another distro.

kmb999 01-19-2002, 09:55 PM Freebsd it is then. Maybe now cpanal will start marketing its software for os's other than linux.

Not everyone. Many people realized that Netscape was all but dead when AOL bought it. Those people (of which I am one) wondered why AOL spent the money for Netscape.

Congratulations! You've successfully installed RedHat Linux! If you wish to receive 3 absolutely free AOL CDs, press 'Y'. If not, press 'Y' to proceed!

:D :(
Mike the newbie 01-20-2002, 09:54 AM Good article that, you may notice based upon my earlier messages, I do not fully agree with. But I think it is a good presentation of the background and ramifications.

DigitalXWeb 01-20-2002, 10:43 AM I must say that looking at this from both sides of the street brings a few things to mind, but in the end all the anti-MS publicity from AOL is in my opinion BS. I personally think AOL is a mere puppet attached to MS and this is their way of gaining more ground in the web server market.. The bad part about this is that currently most web hosting control panels are ported for RedHat, I certainly hope this will change if the purchase is successful.. I would have no problems switching to another distro such as Slackware, Caldera, or Debian as long as they are supported by the current and future control panel software at least for my customers sake... It's a good thing we also use FreeBSD..

:D :(
hahahaha, do you guys really receive too much CDs from AOL for free.
but i guess takeover will not effect current release of red hat linux which is quite stable i guess. :(
Incognito 01-20-2002, 03:43 PM AOL continues out of control. And, so far, they have worsened everything they purchased. Netscape---Could have done great things with it...have done nothing. CNN, etc. ----huge cutbacks. Even the Atlanta Braves---told to reduce scouting staff and other cutbacks.
If I was a RedHat competitor, I would rejoice in the day.
Mayhaps it's a rumor (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/01/21/2239230&mode=thread). But then again, who knows?
DigitalXWeb 01-22-2002, 12:46 PM Unlikley it's just a rumor, I also saw it on CNN.. Not that I believe everything I see or read but if in fact it was a rumor you would think RedHat officials would step up to the plate and say something. It seems to be a pretty hush hush deal on both sides. Either way it's a very bad idea IMHO.

Maybe not?
Nordic 01-22-2002, 01:36 PM According to CNET;
AOL Time Warner apparently is not making a bid to buy Linux manufacturer Red Hat, said sources familiar with the matter. On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that the media giant was near to cutting a deal with Red Hat in a competitive strike against Microsoft. Sources familiar with the situation emphatically insisted the two companies are not near an acquisition deal, nor have they discussed one.

DigitalXWeb 01-22-2002, 04:35 PM I hope the above 2 posts are in fact true, however I still think if there was nothing going on why would Redhat decline to comment?? Oh well guess we will just have to hope and pray that this is just a rumor..
getweb 01-22-2002, 07:36 PM This really sucks! Look what happened to ICQ a few years ago! After ICQ really took off, it started to be very unstable - seems like it was was down every other day, was always going offline. It was probably doomed. Then AOL bought it and poured money into it, and now today it's much more stable and still just as free. Let's hope they don't do the same thing to RedHat!
"I guess for many people, having Mirabilis bailed out by AOL is like having your worst enemy save you from drowning, you're glad to be alive but you sure wish it had been someone else who pulled you to shore."
http://diamond-back.com/icqlies4.html
I am surprised by a AOL/RedHat deal, but the panic is just the same old knee-jerk anti-AOL reaction. It can only help Linux become more mainstream. And if they did go so far as to buy and close RedHat as a pawn of Microsoft, then we've still got every other distrib to fall back on. I say, AOL, give it a shot, what the heck.
Turtle 01-22-2002, 07:52 PM i don't get it, red hat is distributed under gnu gpl license.
if aol buys it, it will invest money into making it a better (or more commercialize) product, but everything is open-source. linux will grow stronger.
we have new open-source input while other distributions still available for 'grep' (grasp :D).
isn't this a good news?
I hope that it will be good news.
Turtle 01-23-2002, 05:40 PM Many will thirstily hope big companies can dive into the open-source movement. the current opensource support is great but restricted by financial problem.
Chances are, no commercial companies will involve in open-source movement, at least not now, until they see the profitable points of doing so.
