Hi,

Have any of you guys ever done any leaflet insert advertising in internet magazines?

We are about to launch a 12 month campaign in a couple of UK magazines and are considering these leaflet inserts to coincide with the printed ad.

It doesnt appear too expensive (approx £500 per 10,000 leaflets) but we are wondering if it will work.

To be honest when I buy a magazine and there are flyers inside I usually throw these away immediately as I think they are a bit annoying. But......??

Your comments/experiences would be appreciated.

Ditto - except I find them more than a 'bit' anoying. :)

Well, as a webmaster I have never paid for services offered for me in a magazine, but it was nice seeing the company that is hosting my sites thee - gave me a feeling of security and that I'm in good hands.

So, if you want to do some branding this is the right choice, but I'm not sure how many clients you'll get from it.

Good luck

Our last campaign in a similar mag returned a pretty good response although it took a couple of months to get going.

Like you say Lonny, we are hoping that maybe the leaflets will help boost the branding side - its a bit more in your face than the printed ad alone.

I would think that most people just throw them out. The first thing I do when I buy a magazine is throw out the leaflets, they are quite annoying. If you are looking to gain exposure consider a small add in the magazine , though I know these are quite expensive

Are small ads effective though?

I'm thinking in particular of Internet Magazin and InternetWorks, both have an ads section at the back, which is something like 10 or more pages of small ads. I've seen LOTS of web hosting ads, offering low cost hosting. But how effective is this, when you're up against a lot of competition. Surely the only noticeable ads are those that are full page and placed in between content sections.

Come to think of it, I ALWAYS see the FastHosts ads in those two magazins, they must do quite well to be able to afford the backcover of the magazine... even though I've only heard negative things about them, LOL.

well, with 130,000 customers and excellent marketing and campaigns it's difficult to fail :)

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this but, I recently enquired about placing an Ad in .Net and got the following quotes:

1/8 page - £375 per issue

1/4 page - £720 per issue

I don't know the price for 1/2 page or full page like the Fasthost ones, but they must be really expensive.

I subscribe to loads of magazines - The first thing that I do before reading them is shake what I call the 'rubbish' out of them then through it in the bin.

Have you considered sending the leaflets out via the Royal mail as 'mail shots' to your chosen postal area? After all if your already advertising in the mag, why duplicate the process?

Eladesor -

Do you have any numbers about how many readers it has? If it has a wide exposure it would justify a high price :)

Duchz:

I presume your talking about the 'mail shots'? if so ---

The minimum contract is £500 for upto 10'500 leaflets, to any postal code that you choose.
Note - this doesn't include the price of the leaflets, which when I last enquired from my local printer was - £90 for 10'000, A5 size.

.net mag was the magazine we did our last adverts in. It is very expensive but those prices you quoted above are the ones on the rate card and you can negotiate those costs down.

.net mag has sales of approx 40,000 i believe, with a readership of around 60,000.

The other cheaper mags (practical internet, web pages made easy etc.) have sales between 15,000 - 25,000). But these two magazines are aimed at a slightly different reader than .net.

Sounds to me like the leaflets should be put off for a while. May be we will just go for a couple of months in .net instead.

Cheers
