View Full Version : Outgrown My Server, Need Advice

I've had an Athlon server with Liquidweb since the start of the year, and I've been very happy with it, but now my users are really starting to outgrow it, particularly in terms of bandwidth.

I could go for a bigger Liquidweb server - their dual Opterons look nice - but the Super Resellerz (https://www.servermatrix.com/solutions/sr24_server.html) server from Server Matrix looks like the ideal package.

Mirrored disks - check. ECC memory - check. Plentiful bandwidth, dual Xeons, reasonable price.

Are Server Matrix good? Reliable network, reasonably responsive tech support? Anything I should be aware of?

Oh, just as an added note - I'm quite comfortable managing the server, so I'd probably only need tech support in case of hardware failure or some other disaster.

Servermatrix are a great company they are in theplanet bandwidth and are a reliable provider, they have good support from what i hear.

You could contact Liquidweb and asked them what they can do you you in terms of an upgrade, maybe they can do you something as you are already a customer, why not stay with Liquidweb if you are happy with them?

Yes, I've got in touch with Liquidweb, and they're seeing if they can do something for me.

But the Super Resellerz machine seems perfect for what I'm doing, so I thought I'd check it out too. :)

They are definitely very different companies, if you expect a similar user experience at a budget server farm you may be less than pleasantly surprised. Then again to each his own, many are satisifed with SM/TP clearly.

That's a valid point.

But as for user experience: I don't need my hand held. I don't need a managed server. Liquidweb had a nice offer at the time, and as I said, they've been great. But all I really need is a stable machine and a reliable network, and someone who will replace the hardware if it blows up.

I realise that Server Matrix won't be for everyone; I'm just trying to work out if they're for me.

I've had two servers on SM/TP's DC 2 and 4.
I've been very pleased with their network uptime and support response time.
However i haven't needed any 'real' support apart from when i had my reverse dns set up.
So far so good (been with them for 3 months)

Go and try it out, if you like it great...if not then you will know what to expect.

From our expierences it generally seems ServerMatrix offers ok support and a decent network. Liquidweb offers good support and generally the network is good but has been a little bit off this month but I still have faith in them to pull it together.

I did test SM (actually a TotalControl server from the Planet) for a possible DC for us and purposefully made sure that after a kernel upgrade the system wouldn't boot. It took about 90 minutes in what I would consider an "urgent" situation to get something done..

ServerMatrix just the other day took 8 hours after they did a force upgrade and put a remote reboot port on the server. Server was working fine until they messed with it, I had to chase them up several times to actually get something done.

I do hope liquidweb will improve their network.
I heard SM is sometimes slow in support.
