View Full Version : buying a domain from a spammer
InternetPEI 09-23-2004, 10:19 AM Hello,
A customer lost his domain a while back(expired before he signed up with us) and now has been trying to recover it for a few years.. I finally worked out a deal on purchasing the domain from the guy who has it now so I can recover it for my client.
He has it with godaddy. He said he wants payment via paypal then will send me the godaddy transfer.
How safe is it buying a name this way?
He just seemed too quick to jump at the first bid I put out there and didnt try to negitiate me up any.
If I have problems getting the domain from him after I pay him, would either godaddy or paypal help out?
Thanks Jason
jvmombay 09-23-2004, 10:31 AM well, like most here, my suggestion would be to use an escrow agent. better to be safe than sorry even if it's just 10 bucks
InternetPEI 09-23-2004, 10:34 AM Thanks. Might need to insist that. Whats the best escrow place online for domains?
Thanks again.
nameslave 09-23-2004, 10:47 AM Escrow.com is the industry standard. But it wouldn't be worth it if the price tag is too low (like low hundreds). And yes, you could always file a complaint with PayPal and have that account frozen. You said the seller was a "spammer"; how did you get that idea? Perhaps you can also ask for some reference, if he's a domain speculator.
InternetPEI 09-23-2004, 10:50 AM Hi nameslave,
I will check out escrow.com Thanks, Spammer? He had the domain pointing to porn pages for awhile and did admit he used it for advertising his sites.
nameslave 09-23-2004, 10:56 AM That doesn't necessarily make him a spammer, but again, if you are not comfortable sending money over first, ask for some reference (forum presence, past sales, etc.) or use a third-party escrow service.
InternetPEI 09-23-2004, 11:00 AM Thanks I will see what he has to say. I am trying to see if there is someway I can confirm contact first since he has fake telcos in his whois..
Bashar 09-25-2004, 02:32 AM or use sedo.com's escrow service its most secure than escrow.com if the sale is so big.
InternetPEI 09-25-2004, 09:12 AM Thanks :) He insisted on doing everything though email and paypal. He was a verfied member of (1) so I took a big breath and went though with it, Well, the domain was pushed to me within 20 minutes and I have full control over it again, I called the origional owner right away and he was some happy to finally have the name back again :)

Congratulations! A verified member of (1) is not particularly impressive, but hey, you've got it finally.
InternetPEI 09-25-2004, 09:52 AM Yep :D

It's absolutely ESSENTIAL to use an escrow (trusted third party) service for domain name transactions--(there may be exceptions--like if youre selling to your dad or something lol...but)
I use escrow.com and although I have only done one transaction with them the process was flawless.
the sale closed saturday and the money was wired in cleared funds to my account on Monday - just awesome
the whole process from acceptance of the buyers offer to cleared funds was less than two weeks
some brokerage sites insist you use THEIR escrow service - I have done this with afternic.com (one transaction) and it went just fine
but when no service is specified escrow.com is THE ONE
I forgot to add--it's the only escrow service recommended by E-Bay - quite a compliment

I disagree. I have conducted well over a hundred $200+ PayPal domain sales and purchases. A few have been up around the $1200-$1800 range.
