I'm just curious, which one makes more money these days? I know it depends on experiences, education and stuff... but in generally, what do you think? And tell me the average salary per year for each? thank you :).

I know it depends on experiences, education and stuff... but in generally, what do you think? And tell me the average salary per year for each? thank you :). kunal 11-17-2000, 01:40 PM I think its the programers. Though my opionion might be biased. ;) etLux 11-17-2000, 03:52 PM On average, it would likely be experienced programmers -- who can perform on the job, on demand, or they're on the doorstep. On the other hand, web developers taken as a group are a grotty lot. The vast majority of them shouldn't be in the business, as they do *not* know their craft. As a result, few of them are successful in business longer term, and it brings down the average earnings of the group as a whole dramatically. This also has the insalubrious side effect of likewise bringing down the salaries of web developers who truly are able and competent, as hiring authorities frequently have a highly unsavory opinion -- based on sad experience, more often than not -- of web developers in general. Nam 11-17-2000, 07:46 PM etLux, computer programers work in group too. In fact, they don't write program from scratch, they mainly editing and changing the code on a premade program. I thought like you guys too, but when I think again. With the rapid growing speed of Internet world, I believe Web developers will have more advantange in the future. Moreover, they can make some of their own website to make money at free time. I want to hear more opinion about this, please. In case you're wondering, my major is computer science :) (2nd year) etLux 11-17-2000, 08:13 PM Originally posted by Nam ...they don't write program from scratch, they mainly editing and changing the code on a premade program. That is NOT programming. It's maintenance. Félix C.Courtemanche 11-17-2000, 08:45 PM Web developer VS Computer Program Maintener ;) I beleive that the programmer can still have the best pay... but someone that can do both may have combined pay, which is even better, isn't it? BC 11-17-2000, 09:06 PM Programmers by far. Particularly if you're into Java. ;) etLux 11-17-2000, 10:20 PM Originally posted by BC Programmers by far. Particularly if you're into Java. I wish someone would tell my boss that -- my paycheck would be a great deal larger. Wait. Something's wrong here... I *am* the boss... BC 11-17-2000, 10:24 PM Wakey wakey et! ;) Nam, there's a link somewhere on one of the major sites which has a link to recent salary surveys - you may want to check http://www.builder.com or http://www.wdvl.com to find it.... If I can find it I'll post it here. If you want to see Australian salaries (for a comparison) - check out http://www.millsharding.com.au then click on the 'Arthur Andersen Salary Survey' near the bottom left hand corner. etLux 11-17-2000, 10:35 PM Here's that CNET link on salaries, BC... http://www.builder.com/Business/SalariesII/ss01.html I think there's more on this somewhere on builder.com -- but I don't recall exactly where at the moment. BC 11-17-2000, 10:38 PM Danke, that's the one.... etLux 11-17-2000, 10:47 PM I think I'm going to tell my boss to either ante up, or I QUIT. Félix C.Courtemanche 11-18-2000, 02:10 AM wow :) me too... *forwarding the link to whom it may concerns* ;) Nam 11-18-2000, 11:37 AM etLux, What I meant was, most of the time, computer programers don't start to write program from scratch. For example, my teacher told us when writing the code, you guys have to make comments (*/ , // ) very clearly for others to change the code. Mirosoft writes Win95 by changing Win 3.1, Win98 by changing Win95, so most the times, there is changing proccess but actually writting program, hope you know what I meant :). |
