View Full Version : Managed Switch or Router that can do this...

I'm not a router guru so forgive me if this is a silly question.

I'd like to get my hands on at least an 8 port managed switch/router that can throttle bandwidth at the port by at least 128K blocks, preferably 64K blocks.

It doesn't even need to be 100mbit as my plan is to colo some servers but I want to limit how bad my 95% will tear me up by limiting the servers to a certain amount of bandwidth each.

The local ISP does colo and does exactly what I'm talking about, if you buy 1mbit they give you exactly 1mbit (non burstable) so somehow it's being throttled.

Thanks

no problem on an managed switchfor bandwidth limiting.
You can even assign an IP to a port.
But check out the product documentation first.

Not true in fact most CHEAP managed switches wont do true rate limiting through their internal IOS. You need a level 3 switch that support QOS or Quality of Service profiles. These will enable you to throttle bandwidth at per mbps levels. Id recommend extreme 48s. New ones retail for about 8000.00 but alot of providers should be able to rent you one for fairly cheap.

Charles is right, you will need a Layer 3 switch which offers some sort of QOS. Extreme, Cisco, Foundry all offer them but they can be quite expensive.

I thought the 2924 could do that. I may be wrong but i know it can do some thing with bandwidth and ip's and not to high ether under 1000.00 bucks..
