Gearhost... you are the perfect host... why do you not come in Unix flavour? :bawling:

Anyone offering similar services on a Unix platform?

GearHost will be offering Unix plans supposedly next week, with more features than the Win2000 plans.

holding breath.

i'm thinking about switching to gearhost. how long have y'all been using them? any issues/ concerns?

one thing about em that i like is that you can host multiple domains w/ one account. from your experience, is that a painless process?

any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
tony

After submitting two trouble tickets (right now you have to go to support to have your domains/subdomains set up ::growls::) However, I'm taking into consideration they've been promising the iControl panel this weekend. Go live's a b*tch ya know, so I'm pretty sure they are swamped ^_^;

Now, I personally like the support they're giving via trouble tickets, but I'm kinda hesitant to sing praises because I still haven't gotten my email about the *nix server that I'm supposed to be moved to, plus I'm still waiting to see how this whole iControl thing works out.

I'm willing to be patient because my main site is still contracted under another webhost. But honestly from what I've experienced so far, if you want your site up and working perfectly right away, I wouldn't recommend migrating it to GearHost until they put themselves together a little more (including their webpage/knowledge center/iControl). If you have a few small sites or dummy domains that you can test their services on, go for it, especially if you want to lock in the kick ass price!

Hope that info helps.

I thought I'd take the plunge myself... will definetly come back to report anything... since they are new... I don't need to do a 24hour turnaround to move my domain but my domain will be moved on Jan.26th... when my contract is up elsewhere... here are my stats...

300,000+ pg view/month
3000 sessions/day

Not a huge traffic site but let's see if they can handle it... going to run it off ther WIN2k plan. Will test my scripts, FTP speeds and support over the next few days.... hmmm...

No comments yet...

p.s. A note to newbies. If you are definetly changing webhosts, it's very likely you have no idea how much restrictions you have on the server or how fast mod requests will be turned around... give yourself time to test and stuff with the I.P.... and alwayz have a backup... if this host don't work out for my deadline date... i already have something else lined up ;)

p.s.s. " hi my name is XXXXXX. I am a webhostaholic. I've gone through 5 webhosts in the last 4years"... we should start a new thread like that... :stickout

4 or 5 hosts A YEAR? Are you saying you're moving almost once every 2 months? I hope you have better luck finding a good web host in the future. ;)

Hehe its not so much that I move, I just accumulate accounts & domains. I've had hosts costing everywhere between 50c and $10/gig, mainly just to try em out. I'm always on the lookout for new hosts & seeing what they have to offer :D Right now, I think I'm sitting on 4 hosts, each under $15/month lol :)

Well.. got the FTP info... etc.. can't wait for Icontrol to work...sent a request in to create some DBs...

Quick question... how can i determine if GearHost is on a fast pipe... i am uploading a couple of ASF files to test and the connection seems very slow on CABLE... did a tracert to my new I.P. and to gearhost.com and notice my 16th hop alwayz timez out...

Is this just me or are other ppl experiencing some traffic tonite...

Thanx...

p.s. i hate uploading below 20k on cable... i know when I was on another host they would alwayz grind to a halt on weekends... like they pulled a plug on a route or something...

You would think with all of this need for *nix we'd be on the ball ;) well we're working on it ... (maybe this weekend hush ... hush).

I'm not sure why you would be having some speed issues spiceman, I'll look into it. A little hint on the hop's too, if you notice 5 of them are internal to us so your hopping all those within 100 feet of the fiber trunk (Juniper Routers).

Well I took the jump to Gearhost for our forum on win2k
http://www.bookiescanbebeaten.co.uk/forum

There were some teething troubles, tickets have been answered and resolved quite quickly ( usually a couple of hours at most )

I had some strange timeout errors, but these have been cleared up. Upload speed is as good as any I have used before, and the forum is running smoothly.

So far, a pleasantly surprised and happy customer.

But I never got that email about the *nix plan features. Are you guys *really* going to have the service up next week for us webhosting junkies? If so will there be a price change? If I build my site on the current W2K platform (excepting my scripts) and put up subdomains, etc... will the site transfer over smoothly to the *nix platform?

If I shouldn't have posted this here, please remove it mods and forgive me for my numbskullishness.

thanks.

I signed up about two weeks ago for a dedicated server and up till now it's all working very smoothly. Speed and reliability are better then I have ever had. This is also the first hosting company that I am actually able to talk to. In fact I have phoned with Ryan and some of the other folks at GearHost almost every night (European time) last week and they solved every issue almost on the spot. They have been amazingly busy with their iControl thing and must have been working 20 hour shifts but still their service was great although some messages were answered later than normal.

Up to now it's all been pretty great and I hope they can keep things up. If you wanna check for speed my main sites are: www.lordotrings.com and www.lordoftheringsshop.com with www.lotrplaza.com being transferred this week. With that I will be able to test their SQL server.

Because so far my subdomain request trouble ticket hasn't been answered since 1/16 and the person I spoke on the phone about the *nix plan on the 17th said that GearHost would send me an email that day with the feature info... and I still haven't received it. I figured they were busy, but now I'm wondering if my ticket and their offer to move me to a *nix server this week has been forgotten x_x

I guess I'll call them tomorrow and find out what's going on.

Although I am getting kinda anxious because I keep hearing next week... next week... I hope I'm not following a carrot.

Sji2671, why your site is redirected to http://bookies.gearhost.net/forum/ ?

sji2671
01-21-2002, 06:46 AM
becaue the domain is hosted elsewhere, the forum was too busy for that host, so we looked for a host just for the forum, so I put up a page to re-direct all the old users to the new host at gearhost.

The sites are on the Dedicated Hoster Plan which basically means 50GB transfer allowance/month (the site has more info). The two sites now average at 1 GB/day with peaks to 2-3. This number will increase when I put on lotrplaza.com and two other sites. Which means I will probably exceed the 50GB/month limit but since I only have to pay $1 /GB extra I am not really worried about that. I am just curious if performance will stay the same once the transfer becomes 2-4 GB/day and the number of simulataneous users becomes a couple of hundred. We will have to see. The sites used be on a shared hosting plan at NTIdesign and I know that pretty much sucked once the site had 300+ active sessions at any one moment.

Do you also get SQL-Server 2000?

I am afraid I am not too much into Server hardware (although I bet this is pretty interesting to know if you hire one). I have a Compaq 360 rack server, which tells me nothing at all but may have meaning for you guys.

They have their own seperate server for SQL server databases that I just stated using to test out the new solution for lotrplaza.com. It seems way, way faster than where it is currenly hosted: Access database on shared account. I got 5 fixed IPs and numerous other features that I am not using and have little to no knowledge about. I suggest you contact them for more info about the dedicated server deals.

"Your account has been established and is already accessible! ".

Since then I've been trying to login to my account and ftp uploading, but it's never been successful.
It seems my account has not been created. I just sent an email to them with the details.

I had email them 5 times last week in order to get more info. on their services offer with dedicated sever as well as the cost of extra services like backup

So far no answer.

Also, I have tried 4 times the web form to get the same info: description of services offer with dedicated services and cost of extra services like backup.

No answer either.

Simple two reasons:

1. My time zone is 9 hours ahead of them!

2. Time it will take and long distance charges for support on the 74 domains is something else to consider.

So not just for sale but for support I will need a host company capable of handle email questions or have a good web support system.

What email did you used? I email to sales@gearhost.com?

Maybe u can ask them for a detail description on the services that come with dedicated sever and the cost of extra services: backup and firewall. And tell me via email or pm.

I, too, received a prompt email with my account details when I signed up. After changing my domain pointers to their name servers, I realized the domain still did not properly resolve to my account. An email to support cleared that up within 24 hours.

More recently, I decided to start writing some ColdFusion pages to goof around with. I discovered my account had ASP installed but not ColdFusion as I had expected from reading the features list... The sign-up process did not indicate that I had to request ColdFusion in any way, so it seems reasonable that it is a feature on all shared accounts.

I opened a ticket to inquire about ColdFusion availability on 1/19/2002 3:51 PM. No replies or updates yet; it appears the ticket has yet to be assigned or worked on.

I'm not upset about the lag in support since this is just a toy site (I was testing their reliability), but I definitely think they may be overwhelmed by their success in attracting business. I'll just let it ride. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for me to get a response, although I'll probably get an answer ASAP, now that I've posted this. :D

I haven't ...

I have. When I first called, I spoke to a woman once but she forwarded me to Ryan.

I'm guessing that support has been kinda slow because they are trying to roll out both their iControl panel as well as the new *nix plans this week, on top of it, I can only assume that they are getting lots of orders. I don't email them at all. I always use a support ticket. I had one ticket that wasn't answered for four days but by the time I called them on the fourth day, they had resolved the problem. It was to set up my subdomains, so I don't think it should have taken so long. I'm glad that I can do stuff like that myself now. I hate submitting trouble tickets or speaking to support about anything.

Correct, as bakura82 stated IkonBoard will run just fine over Windows 2000 (we run a ton of them). The only trick is to have a couple of pre-installed components to make the db file and mysql data sources to work.
