Did an inquiry for a client who wants a cool photo gallery on their web site - but doesn't have PHP. Wrote the hosting company (who's name I won't say) and got the following:
"Hi Shawn,
Thanks for your inquiry regarding PHP scripting capability at *******.Com. We do indeed offer PHP support, however we do charge for it. The fee is $20 setup fee and $20/month add-on to any of our hosting plans. If you go with our Standard plan or higher, I can have the setup fee waived. Does this fit your budget for hosting this site?"

Is it just me or is that really expensive?

That does seem expensive. PHP support is offered standard by most hosts.

I thought PHP was standard in most plans if the host had the ability to provide it on the server. But if you are going to pay for it, make sure it is PHP 4.

Every day I see somebody adding standard items as extra cost items on their sites. f I had a dollar for every email we got saying "Well, such and such.com offers this and that for free why don't you?" When in reality they end up paying more because of little items like this. If they didn't inquire before signing up they would be SOL.

Agreed, most hosts include PHP at no charge.

As someone else pointed out here, there is nothing wrong with charging extra for a service that is not "standard" on your servers. However, something like php is not installed on a per user basis, so once it's installed, it's there for all. How does one justify charging a setup fee, after it's setup for the first person who asks for it? And I won't even comment on the charges

Shop elsewhere.
There's a thousand hosts who offer this service free. No setup fee, no monthly fee. Furthermore, discounting server resources, PHP costs absolutely nothing, so draw your own conclusions about what this pricing plan indicates about how this server does business.

Yes that seems like a ridiculously high pricel. I would certainly suggest looking for a new host.

I was under the assumption that once PHP was installed, it could be used pretty much server wide?
