View Full Version : need cheap web host that....
meichan 01-17-2002, 04:46 PM okay i have a problem.. with the 4 webhosts ive tried theyve all deleted my account or refunded my order. Why?? because my site is anime related (but not hentai)! Where is a CHEAP webhost that will allow anime sites?? thanks~!:)
Walter 01-17-2002, 04:50 PM Why would any web host don't allow Anime ?
The Laughing Cow 01-17-2002, 04:52 PM Correct me if I am wrong,
I believe that some of this material may be a kind of Cartoon porn?
meichan 01-17-2002, 04:54 PM no its not hentai (porn stuff) its just an anime fan site -__- seems like i have "illegal copywrited stuff" but i put a disclaimer and added credits and everything
Walter 01-17-2002, 04:54 PM But he said Anime, not Hentai.

Hm, no offense, but either you are dead or alive. Do you have the permission of the copyright holder or not?
meichan 01-17-2002, 04:59 PM unfortunately, no its virtually impossible to get a reply from them! dont say i havent tried
tazd9t9 01-17-2002, 04:59 PM hi, have you got a link to the site of yours or is it down becuase of the lack of host?
meichan 01-17-2002, 05:00 PM welll u can see a kinda preview here i guess:

The images are copyrighted for a reason - it's illegal to copy them without the owners permission, so no reputable host would want to host you, as what you are doing is illegal....
meichan 01-17-2002, 05:17 PM okay.. can u tell me if
http://www.lelola.com
is doing illegal stuff 2?
sayap 01-17-2002, 05:46 PM i think a fansite is legal... and it will make the anime more famous......
meichan 01-17-2002, 05:48 PM *sigh* this is impossible.. i had a really good and active fan site too (around 200-400 unique visitors per day!) but now.... *pllllease someone help me!*
BenDoherty 01-17-2002, 06:06 PM maybe get your new host to try and contact them as this may be more effective.
Regards
Ben
meichan 01-17-2002, 06:26 PM thanks for all of your suggestions.. if u dont know im pretty young (im a teen) and im new to this copy right thing-y but i just want to build a site for everyone to see and enjoy (and thats in MY budget).. and suggestions.. please email me or post!
ochiba 01-17-2002, 06:57 PM I've been running an anime collective fansite and anime community for over a year. On top of that we do fansubbing online (translation, timing, serving, etc...) of rare/old shoujo or shounenai titles whenever we find a title that we think seriously needs to be licensed in the US. So far every webhosting company I know of supports anime fansites. And anime companies will often link fansites to their corporate pages.
Why don't you go to anipike (sponsored site that specializes in links to anime fansites) and check out all of the fansites there? See what they are hosted on, and apply for accounts with those webhosts? I would recommend my host, but I hate them cuz they ripped me off for a month, so I would rather suck down molten lava while sitting butt nekkid in a rose bush rather than give them another dime of business.
Umm... if your site is small try ADDR.com. I think this company rocks, and I've run my Russian Tatu fansite on it for a long time. I know that A+ Hosting hosts like a bazillion anime related fansites, but I think their plans suck; However, if you aren't running a collective then you shouldn't have a problem with their rates and features ^_^
And if a host tells you that all anime is hentai, tell them that's why you need to them to host your fansite, so that you can help them as well as others to GET A CLUE!
ganbatte yo!
ochiba
meichan 01-17-2002, 07:11 PM i would turn to free hosts.. except my site is HUGE -_- it was pretty cool too
Pilgrim 01-17-2002, 08:16 PM Hello Meichan,
Did any of your hosts tell you how they came to the conclusion that it was copyrighted material?
A "normal" host would not look at an anime graphic and say "whoa, lets cancel this site. This is highly illegal!"
Almost sounds like someone is following your site around and each time you set it up is threatening your new host with legal action.
I would contact several of your old hosts and ask them.

My advice : NEVER host with A+
meichan 01-17-2002, 08:31 PM sooo ure saying someone hates my guts?? that sux! *sigh*
Pilgrim 01-17-2002, 08:35 PM Well, it does happen :(
And not always because they hate you but just because they can and they get this warm and fuzzy feeling inside when they manage to make someones life miserable.
But it's just a thought. Ask your former hosts to be sure. I just find it strange that they all so sudden give you your money back and say "sorry, we no host you no more" 1 Time...ok 2 Times...ok
But 4 times..?
meichan 01-17-2002, 08:46 PM someones stalking me... *sigh* okay thanks!
meichan 01-17-2002, 08:55 PM What happens is there is a program on our servers that searches for any
type of violation and then informs the engineers and the engineers take
what ever action is needed. It is not a case of someone "turning you
in".
*rolls eyes** is there a such program??
Pilgrim 01-17-2002, 09:09 PM There is no program that can detect copyrighted graphics. After all, you can name the .gifs to anything you want.
Anything else on your site that is out of the ordinary? Dubious cgi scripts they might detect, a hacked version of a bulletin board, anything?
Look at it on the bright side: nobody hates you and you are not being stalked ;)
meichan 01-17-2002, 09:18 PM nope just boring html and gif and jpg files! not cgi installed yet either!! maybe someone does hate me.... grr.. that stinks!
Pilgrim 01-17-2002, 09:29 PM Maybe it was your bandwidth consumption that scared them away? 200-400 unique visitors on a graphics intensive site might possibly eat more bandwidth then they were prepared to give.
But it is all guesswork.
/me would feel more comfortable now if someone else stepped in with some suggestions :)
meichan 01-17-2002, 09:33 PM ahh unfortuanately i was just getting started ^-^
well thanks Pilgrim!! you've helped a lot, I even emailed the reseller people! Hope they can reply with a logical explaination. I think I've got it all figured out about now .. and if I don't.. ill come back lol! ^-^
richy 01-19-2002, 10:39 PM im not very clued up oncopyright beyond the basics but isnt there a 'fair use' law for fansites and the like? not sure exactly what the law states but i think it allowed limited use of copyrighted material where copyright it noted on the page.
but do get in touch with your old hosts and find out how they found out.
meichan 01-20-2002, 12:34 AM read the above post for what they said.. they said something about scanning my site -_- ... and finding the copyright material??? psh. Annnyway, I'll try to look that up.. and if you find anything on it, richy, please email me! Thanks!
Asher S 01-20-2002, 02:18 AM Anime is Japanese animation cartoons (I luv em ;))
Hentai is cartoon porn.
IceBlaZe 01-20-2002, 06:59 AM Just a sidenote:
Your side is called MyEchi -> My Echi if im not mistaken...
Correct spelling for Echi - Ecchi
And Ecchi is pervert in japanese, Ecchi is another word for Hentai...
I'm quite sure your host didn't figure that out - but your sites name means My Hentai. :stickout
meichan 01-20-2002, 07:04 AM ARE U SURE???
ouch!!
i dont have hentai... are u SURE? i made that up completely and its echi not eechi and mei means beautiful ITS CHINESE NOT JAPANESE!
meichan 01-20-2002, 07:12 AM and its pronounce MI=MEI like my name MEICHAN -_- :o duh!
IceBlaZe 01-20-2002, 10:41 AM All I know is that Ecchi is another word for a hentai-type material...
Sorry if I was wrong! DUH ;)
meichan 01-20-2002, 10:58 AM lol sorry to be snappy! ^-^ i just dont want anyone to think i intententially made it that way! Sorry IceBlaze!;) :D :)
klisis 01-20-2002, 12:03 PM I have been running an anime site for 3 & half years without a problem of copyright.
(URL is in my signature).
And the site is quite busy one as well (100,000 hits , 2800 visitors per day).
I haven't changed my host much (Three times in 3 & half years).
meichan 01-20-2002, 12:30 PM :o  :bawling: i think someones stalking me or something *eep freeky* but I have emailed ALL the C owners and hopefully they'll respond!
richy 01-20-2002, 02:20 PM lol they scanned your site to find it. can we please have a smiley of someone coughing and saying a swear word.
beyond bringing up lists of files with certain extensions and manually checking all sites on a regular basis theres virtually no way to scan for copyrighted images. sure watermarking exists but is rarely used and i doubt very much that so many hosts use it. they prolly just took your money and ran when you got near their overselling margin.
as i said laws not my area yet altho i intend to do a few courses soon and it does vary a lot round the globe. the fair use act does exist and has been used a lot with the lord of the rings sites that have sprung up. you can only use limited bits, in good taste and you have to credit the source.
but at the end of the day copyright is copyright and exists for a reason. to protect the value of peoples work. im not familiar with the cartoons, but at a basic level if you were scanning in entire strips wholesale then that = bad, if you were explaining about them and giving brief exposures then that would be tolerable, i.e. does it improve sales or does it negate the need for them.
im a 'little' suprised that a host pulled a site on the strength of a mail from someone that has no connection to the material. i reasonable course would be to suspend and investigate it. depends if you paid yearly and on the quality of your host.
check up on the law thing. in the uk your first consultation with a solicitor is usually free so if its similar where you are it may be worth consulting a professional or a citizens adivce bureau if you have one.
good luck. if your right then you will be ok. theres always the chance you may be in the wrong if your site is detrimental to the sales of the orginal material.
ochiba 01-20-2002, 02:43 PM There are a bunch of hosts that will host you so long as you aren't bootlegging scanslations. Anime information sites come in abundance. Honestly, if you are getting flack, you should recheck your site and make sure that you aren't posting anything that could hurt a company.
Also, be careful with ADV material, that company started from an anime club/fansubbing group and turned into a coporate tyrant ::bat rastards:: They shut down sites all the time for bootlegging their stuff, and they are the only company I know of that actually goes *looking* for fansites that bootleg. However, they seem quite gentle with fansites that aren't bootlegging. I've only corresponded with them twice, and I host an info page on one of their domestic anime titles.
So again, make sure that you really aren't in gross violation of copyright. Make sure that you aren't scanlating entire series *or* trying to make a profit from your fansite through ads or other money-making ventures (that is illegal, and most anime companies will hunt you down and kick you in your knees for that), and afterwards... just look on this board, pick a decent webhost and start again.
ja.
ochiba
I found the "etchi/ecchi" comment rather amusing Ice! Welcome to my lil' "H" site... bwahahahaha!
meichan 01-20-2002, 02:53 PM thanks ochiba ^-^ even though i didnt find the eechi thing amusing lol but im chinese and i only know chinese so ^^
anyway thanks for the support! If you want to know my site is back up you can check it out if you want
i wont give up on something i like doing so easily so dont worry! ^^
GlobalProNetwork 10-24-2002, 09:27 PM Do you have aim? I can see where your problem is. You have tons of illegal downloads and this is why most hosts will shut you down. Most Dragonball sites and other anime sites are now being tracked to see if they have illegal clips and videos. You have plenty. I myself had over 100K+ hits when I was younger with OV and we didn't even need all of that stuff. We just had images and gallerys of only jpeg files. I would host you at a cheap price but you have to get rid of the illegals because Funimation and all of the creators can sue you to the bone. I made sure to e-mail funimation and talk to their executives to make sure my site is safe from their lawyers. We now have a good trusting relationship with them and I hope that won't change since we don't do anything illegal and they praise us for advertising their animes for free.
