Hi, I was just wondering whether special offers and competitions make you look tacky?
I know some sites that have too many special offers make me think are they really offers or are they always like this..eg. ineedhits.com have had their sale on for months.
I would also be interested to hear what you think of members forums and whether they are worth it.......or whether people just sign up for hosting and dont expect members forums...........I have been offered scripts such as free sms scripts that i could use on the members forums etc as well as custom ftp programs from a site i sponsor.
Is any of this really worth it?

Hi,
It depends what sort of "special offers" you offer, some are very effective for companies but as you say some just look tacky and a cry for customers, quite a few people post their offers in the special offers forum, and i believe many people are glad of these, so i would say it depends on the offer and the nature of it.

Hey Ben, have u got any advise on offers that are not tacky? I have thought of running a competition but i think that i will only get extra hits from that and not extra customers!!
I need to promote my site effectively with only a small amount of cash and i dont really know what to try that will actually work

It depends in what way you do it as was already stated in this topic.
The types of questions people ask are: How can you do it so low? Etc. Also I tend to put an end date on the special offers this also makes it look less tacky.
Best of luck!

I always associate advertisements like "now 50% discount on all hosting packages!" with the word DESPERATE!
It also makes me wonder if everybody is always paying 50% too much :(

But the truth of the matter is; you 'can' afford to supply a limited quantity of products or services at a discounted price.
I can think of no store that doesn't use this practice as an incentive to entice more traffic.
However, a web hosting company is far removed from the corner grocery store. You can hardly expect to have a "special" on something that will bring in traffic that will purchase something else while they're there.
