ok so ive been getting free hosting and forums from my friend, who is on a long vacation now. his domain name expired. the hosting is still up, and i can see his index at the following link:

http://69.56.168.170/

that page used to be www.vivacitynet.com but that domain is now gone. i was operating a forum at www.lawnwranglers.vivacitynet.com but now i cant find that. my friend and i tried hard to find out what the url to THAT would be, but couldnt find out. does anybody know how the subdomains work with linking to sites without domain names, like this one? thanks

There isn't anything you can do. Your friend (the registrant of the domain) must renew it.

weird, so normally it would work fine for pages that didnt have subdomains like http://69.56.168.170/ but in this case i have to have a subdomain? the FTP still works fine, so the files should be somewhere on the net, im just having trouble finding exactly where :-/

Well, if it's a cpanel server, should be something like this,

http://69.56.168.170/~username/

Your friend better act fast on renewing it too. After 30 days of expiration passes, the domain goes into redemption period. When this happens Verisign charges big money to release it from redemption. You either have to pay their ransom (75-$150 plus renewal fee) or wait for 65 days to pass and then re-register it.

infact its 85-200 and some people charge more plus renewal fee.

better to renew ASAP
