I want to get a separate DNS server for my hosting company, what would be sufficient for this job? Would a regular p3 server do the job? Preferably something under $40 a month..

You could get away, easily, with a low end VPS.

Sprocket Data has a $35 server just for the job. http://www.sprocketnetworks.com/dedicated

These guys are so geekey, they give geeks a bad name.

Why use a bull dozer when a shovel will do. Looks like $35 is a good price and will do the job. But, I guess you are still agonizing over mhz's.

Trust me, my those old boat anchors could fill a T-1 all month long.

to me, an old p2 233 mhz server isn't worth $35 a month. i can probably get a p3 or duron with that price from other providers.

How about share the server with someone in same situation?

I have one server as a secondary name server. It's cel 2.4 with 5 ip. It should be more than enough to server 2 secondary nameserver. Right now, I'm looking for people who can share the server and pay little part of bill. Maybe around $30.

If you have friend in similar situation and can trust each other, this kind of thing can be work out.

I'd be interested in finding out how you spend your $35 dollars. Please come back and tell us what you found.

Actually I can get P3 800Mz with $35. Just remove good support part of your checking list. There are many if you contact sales directly. I was offered similar one multinple times.

You could look at a VPS from a higher-end provider like ServInt. We just bought a VPS there for DNS hosting and couldn't be happier. It is well worth their prices and is much more powerful then those $35 boxes ;)
