View Full Version : Linux w/cPanel OR Windows w/Plesk?
ZoneServ.com 09-19-2004, 05:29 PM Hey guys,
I am wondering which of the following reseller packages you would prefer;
Linux w/cPanel OR Windows w/Plesk?
Regards,
Gil.
submenu 09-19-2004, 05:42 PM It depends on what you and your customers are looking for. If you can, offer them both. But if you have to choose just one, that is a decision only you can make. The linux/cpanel market is heavily saturated too. The windows market in general is a more open for startups, but will cost more for to you and your customers.

Indeed true,
As I see it Windows has many qualities, when a reseller gets a Windows package he knows that his customer will have more possibilities (PHP, ASP, ASP.net, and on and on).
In the other hand Linux is cheaper, very secure and stable (Thought Windows can be stable if it's managed good).
So what would you choose?

Gil.
Veghost 09-19-2004, 10:40 PM I would advice you Linux w/cPanel, it's a better stable solution and you can easily find replacement for your host. Also Linux is quite scalable and less expensive.
Elen47 09-20-2004, 06:55 PM Linux / Cpanel much more stable and reliable, also has ASP using Tomcat, Windows prone to DOS attacks and constant security holes. In my humble opinion.

Linux is not more stable, nor is Windows "more prone to DOS attacks" (crazy statement).
The choice is purely based on user preference. If a user needs ASP, they should go with windows (Yes, apache ASP works, but is no replacement for the real thing).

Elen47 09-20-2004, 07:15 PM Sorry IHSL, but I am not crazy, and Windows servers are not as secure or as stable as Linux servers and they are more prone to outside attacks as I have experienced attacks with windows servers and none with Linux. So my preference is Linux. ( Also less expenseive software and upgrades ). This is reflected in the security upgrades in all Windows software.

Of course, if you don't have the requisite experience in managing a windows server, you'll have problems
I agree 100% with Simon. Windows is in no way less stable or secure than linux. I infact regard Windows 2003 to be more secure than RedHat Linux.
FYI, Linux has more security patches released in 2002 than Windows 2000.
Elen47 09-20-2004, 08:41 PM You all have your opinion and I have mine and we are all entitled to them. I certainly didn't say anyone was crazy for their opinion! My windows server has made a wonderful machine for backing up my sites after pulling off all the expensive windows software and replacing it with Linux/apache. Might even make a great boat anchor some day.................................just my opinion!
UnifiedNet 09-20-2004, 11:42 PM The post actually stated that your statement was crazy.
This is after all an open forum so do to the fact that we post our comments we are left open for judgement! You do raise valid points but we have been putting a 2003 server through alot of testing and must say it runs neck in neck!!
anyway p.s. Elen your NUTS!!!! j/k

There is two ways to look at that. Either Microsoft has less security holes than Linux (highly unlikely), or Microsoft just doesn't patch all their holes.
Chance 09-22-2004, 12:28 PM Always Linux! :)
