View Full Version : Doubts on Paypal
alphabeta 09-19-2004, 02:08 AM Hi I''m quite confused with paypal....(Probably because my situation is abit different). I really hope you guys will help me out :)
I'm based in Malaysia (beside Singapore if you dont know) and my country is vefified by Paypal. I dont have a credit card.
This is the situation:
1. They need a credit card to verify my acc. Ok fine i dont want it to be verified, but can I still get payments?
2.If i could get payments, what are the ways I can withdraw my money?Checks? (Please bear in mind I'm having a non-US account)
3. What are the ways I can use to send money to my account(So that I can buy things in Ebay)? Please tell me ... I dont seem to have a way to add funds unless I hav credit card....Is there no other way for non US-Residents?
Please do suggest some other trusted payment sites that can help me solve the problem(esp. the 3rd) that I can use rather than Paypal.
Thx alot hope to hear from you guys soon :)
Allah 09-19-2004, 02:44 AM ...which I suggest you read first.
In short:
1)
Receive yes, but no withdrawals without CC. You must be verified.
2)
ONLY to a US bank account. No other way for you (Malaysia). You'll have to walk that arduous (Wells Fargo) or costly (Valis Savings) road. Before doing anything, read ALL threads about US banking for non-US citizens carefully. That's a tall order, but it's ALL there!
3)
Only from your US bank account. Also read PayPal's FAQ, putting in: "funding account" or "account funding". More info also on other threads in this forum. Read them!
4)
Ikobo (a PayPal clone). Read about them (good and bad) on other WHT threads.
Yowcow (Australian), but I don't know if they accept Malaysia.
Many others, but more expensive. You'll find names of other 3rd party PP's on other threads.
Summary:
Take a day or so vacation and read all WHT EC threads about these subjects. You'll graduate as a US banking professor...
paulcoin 09-19-2004, 02:53 AM That's the only place where you can send your money to, as a non-US alien.
I also suggest you read all WHT-EC threads about US banking and PayPal, because you will see lots of usuful tips there.
But BEWARE!!! If you are going to apply to Wells Fargo for a personal checking account, DON'T even DARE to mention the word PayPal or eBay or the like. If you do, say Salam to your WF account! Valis doesn't have that problem, but there you pay big bucks just for the right to own a US bank account, before you have even started. The WF setup is free.
Take a good breath, a cup of strong coffee, and start reading the many WHT-EC threads. After a while you'll like it!
alphabeta 09-19-2004, 10:59 AM Thankz alot! it really helps me alot.
But do you mean i open an acc in a US Bank so that:
1. I can receive payments from Paypal (as I am a non-us no credit card user)
2.I can wired transfer my money from Malaysia to my US Bank account and thereafter transfer money to Paypal?
Am I right to state that? :)
Thx once again.
paulcoin 09-19-2004, 12:09 PM 1. You can receive payments even now. but unless you have a US bank account, you can't withdraw them anywhere. The only thing you can do now is using your PP funds to buy things on the Internet. The fact that you did not link a Malaysian CC to your PP acount, is irrelevant to this issue. Even if you do, you still need a US bank account.
2. Yes, but why all that hassle and expense, just to fund your PP acount? If you are going to be an Internet merchant or service provider, you'll be earning money as you work, and money will be pouring (or trickling...) in to your PP acct. Your problem will not be getting money getting INTO PP, but how to get it OUT and use it. By the way...when you open the PP account, you don't need to start with a balance, which may even be zero for some time. As long as do not have a debit balance, that's okay.

Don't bother wasting your time trying to get a bank account in the United States. If you want a means to simply withdraw money from your PayPal account, I suggest crossing the causeway into Singapore and open an account there. With a Singapore bank account, you may withdraw funds from your PayPal account into your bank account.

Did you mean open any Singapore bank accounts?
Or any US banks in Singapore?

I am pretty positive that opening an account with say UOB or another singaporean bank would be ok. You might want to email PayPal to verify that the bank you wish to open an account with is supported by PayPal.
Also, i must add that you are going to still need to enter into the expanded use program in order to withdraw money into your account. However, with most chequing accounts in singapore, you will get a debit visa card with it. Hence, entering into that program will no longer be a problem
Lastly, you will need to open a new paypal account and have it as a "singapore account" and not a "malaysia account" otherwise you might have problmes

Contact helpdesk 09-20-2004, 11:56 AM 2Fangs, on other threads I read all kinds of horror stories from people who try to access their PP account from an IP address which is not of their own country. If one opens a Singapore PP account, but then is going to access his account from a Malaysian IP address, won't this cause any problem.
And...what about the personal information - such as address - you have to give to PayPal? That must be a real Singapore address.
What a hassle!
I think going the extra mile and open a US bank account may still be simpler than all the a/m issues.

I guess my suggestion was easier said than done. Do post your experience when you open your US bank account.
Contact helpdesk 09-20-2004, 01:27 PM ...God willing, I'll also open an account with Wells Fargo. I read all the "non-US" banking threads. By Allah, that's even longer than the Holy Quran! But I finished reading all threads, visited the WF site, and printed out all the pdf documents. Now I'll have to scrape together USD 100, and send everything to Frisco.
Don't worry, I won't be stupid enough to tell them that it is for PayPal or eBay. The Prophet is too smart for that...
tatayoyo 03-09-2005, 10:12 PM I have my bank account opened with hsbc usa for two months now. I used Easy Corp Ltd to get this account opened and it was done within one month. Maybe it can help... this is totally free banking with HSBC.

hostingasia 03-16-2005, 11:03 PM Still sounds very troublesome to me.
openXS 03-17-2005, 01:44 AM Malaysia, China, India or any neighboring country to Singapore can easily open a Singapore Bank account to use PayPal.
However, every bank account except US, attracts transaction fees.
But yes, to open a singapore bank account is easy as pie. ;)
Webhoster2004 03-18-2005, 01:02 AM We stay as far away from Paypal as possible.
Mikey this way! 03-18-2005, 02:46 AM I read about opening a Bank A/c in Singapore for using with Paypal.
Will it be the same if I open a bank account in Hong Kong as I have lots of local backup (read friends) who can help me out.
george923 03-19-2005, 01:03 PM I HAVE BOUGHT ITEMS FROM SINGAPORE USING PAYAL

Yep, you're correct in both of those statements
greekguy 03-28-2005, 01:46 PM tatayoyo: I am very interested to hear how you opened the bank account through Easy corp. Can you email me at "greekmirmidonas" .....on gmail....com ?
Thank you in advance.
does the information in paypal and your bank has to tally? What if the name you registered under paypal doesnt match the bank you added in paypal. Will the funds get "eaten" just like that or will it bounce?
my bank isnt helping much with paypal questions. and their hotline is forever busy..
Kaykay 04-06-2005, 03:14 PM Hi,

Thanks

I don't know whether the name on the account is checked - it would probably depend on the bank. It is unlikely to cause problems for US accounts; however, I'm not very familiar with possible complications with processing bank deposits in other countries.
If for any reason the deposit is rejected, I think the money will go back to your PayPal balance. You would need to contact PayPal support for assistance if you are experiencing any problems with your deposits.
Please note that there will always be some delay in getting the funds to your account. The PayPal website should provide you with information on the standard processing time for deposits; if you have been waiting longer than the time posted, please contact support for further assistance.
