View Full Version : Raq outdated vs Plesk & Ensim.. ->VOTE<-
AceInTheHole 01-17-2002, 02:34 AM OK, I've search the pages and haven't found anything recient.
Need a Dedicated server for web projects, sites for friend/family -personal and small business say 20 - 50 websites. Figue I'll buy and co-locate it for 2-3 years ( at about $50 mo at afforable colo or something). Want to focus on development serving up database and .pdf files and have easy admin.
Are Cobalt Raq 4i still competitive vs Ensim/Plesk servers??? And if so, is the value there for a Raq 4 at $1400 vs a Raq 3 at $400. I can install PHP and have a Raq 4 minus the 150 mhz and chili soft right? I'd hate to buy a Raq 4 now only to see a Raq 5 in 6 mos from now.
AceInTheHole 01-17-2002, 02:53 AM Gosh, is it obvious that I'm a "Complete Newbie"?
Chicken 01-17-2002, 02:59 AM I don't think there's a tremendous difference in the two machines, aside from some RaQ4's (4r's) having dual HD's and RAID1, but if that's not something you are in need of, the 3 should do you pretty good.

You just answered your own question.
The RaQ is (in my opinion) a much better choice for the newbie.
Compare price:
1U server: $800 minimum + Plesk 300 domains $599
RaQ4 you said $1400 has support for (200? 250? 255?) domains (and that can be removed I hear to allow even more).
In your situation I say "go raq".
Regards,
AceInTheHole 01-17-2002, 03:05 PM Geez, with RS pushing those Ensim servers, I'm wondering why all of the votes are coming in for Plesk and Raq?
Looks to me like Raq's are still competitive as a web server vs Plesk & Ensim. (I'll take everyone's advise and get a Raq). It seems like Ensim should be a pretty powerful w/ all of the automation and levels of permissions and help files and stuff...
Without hands on experience, looked like ensim was way to go, but without it, looks like i have to depend on the experience of WHT users.
Thx:cartman:
airtime166 01-17-2002, 03:15 PM also keep in mind that when you buy your own server and colo with it the company hit u hard on bandwidth and support
my 2 sents
remarkable 01-18-2002, 12:40 AM I highly suggest not a dedicated server with WEBppliance but a Private Server with WEBppliance
I've seen many 100's of these with 20 to 50 domains run while I worked at Ensim. You can't beat it also. You get managed services, don't worry about hardware etc..
Everyday 01-18-2002, 12:57 AM I agree. Why not get an Ensim Private Server? They are pretty inexpensive and you get all the power of a dedicated at a fraction of the cost.

Everyday 01-18-2002, 01:11 AM Nope ;) Just all that information provided to me by Ensim.:D
AceInTheHole 01-18-2002, 03:51 AM Private Server, With no HW problems and service too. I wonder if I can install "site studio" on the server (http://www.psoft.net/SS/site_studio_info.html), or other value added applications. I'll check it out. Any suggestions/reconmenndations?:wavey:

Yes. Site Studio will install on an Ensim Private Server.
Everyday 01-18-2002, 09:58 AM We're actually beta testing Site Studio now to see if we want to keep it or not. I've got some real non computer people using it so I can evaluate its usefulness and ease of use.
AceInTheHole 01-19-2002, 12:01 AM Umm, Reliable Hosting,
I noticed that your in Henderson. So, ya think I could get a locals special on your Webapplicance private server. I'm down here by Boulder Station & would love to keep business local. :wavey:
Only really have a couple site now & This sounds like a neat idea.
AceInTheHole 01-19-2002, 02:47 AM OK, the survey results is way too funny.
I think, what if I was on Who Wants to be a Millionair, and I ask the audience "raq, ensim, plesk, na"; and the reply is 25% all the way around. no wonder there's so many "ensim vs plesk" threads out there.

"REMARKABLE HOSTING"
Yep.. Henderson all the way..
I'm over here by Sunset Station (you know that eveyone else has no idea what we are talking about ;) )
Locals Special?? Humm.. Give me a call.
The RAQ XTRs are pretty nice. Here are the stats on that, they cost somewhere around $3200, and well worth it. You can get a 850 MHZ, 256 MB RAM, 2x30 GIG HD, and much more.
Also, the control panel is really nice, check it out at www.cobalt.com

Incognito 01-26-2002, 10:50 AM None of the above running neck and neck with the others. It seems we are all still in search of the perfect Control Panel solution. I think that is what is leading to the new introductions, with H-Sphere aggressively going after the market, with HostGui about to explode on the scene, and with McHost's new panel coming soon.
It will be interesting to see if any strike on the "perfect solution" or if we simply continue to debate the pros and cons as they all have strengths and all have weaknesses.
