I am surprised how many people said they still use dial up. You know, I wonder if the results of this poll won't be skewed because of the title. I almost didn't look at this thread because when I read that title "What modem do you have?" I thought it was about modem brands or something. And, since I connect to the internet via cable I thought "I don't use a modem; there's nothing interesting there" (I know there aren't a lot of people who use semicolons in their thoughts, but I am one of them).

Because of course, in spite of the common use of the term "cable modem," we all know that's not a modem! And of course you don't use a modem if you have a DSL connection, or a T-1, or any of the other choices.

But my point is that some users who use connections other than dialup might not look at this thread so the percentage of dialup users might be misrepresented -- and the poll might become even less "scientific" and accurate than these polls normally are. A better title would be "What type of internet connection do you use?"

I have to agree with Jayc :)

I use dial-up but only because I have to - living out in the country has it's disadvantages :)

And satellite is only getting startaed and very expensive - $75/month including required dialup connection to send information. Once the two-ways are out and begin to gain popularity, it should be good :D

I have glorious AT&T brand cable internet access. I say glorious because I was not on the @Home side when AT&T cut off service for a bit. Ha!

Note: Never use DSL. Ever. All companies involved in your dsl connection WILL provide you with the following wonderful services:
1) Billing you an amount nowhere near within $10 of the correct price
2) Conveniently billing you for other people's accounts
3) Cutting off service when you follow their specific instructions
4) Having repeated long, unexplained downtimes with no refunds

And you will experience all the thrills of:
1) "Decibel problems"
2) A not truly "always-on" connection (usually)
3) The world's worst technical support team ever assembled. These people barely know what company they work for, so don't expect very good support.
4) Spending a while attaching filters to every phone in your house

DSL industry official motto: "Birthplace of Crappy Service"

Trust me. DSL is evil.

Oh yeah, dial up too. It's slow. slow. slow. sllloooowww.

Maybe you need a differnet provider? My dsl is GREAT! I got in on a special. $15 a month for 768/128 dsl. ( plus telco fees ) I have great uptime, every since my isp changed to att instead of qwest. ( for their t1s ) Even still they emailed every customer explaining why they're was downtime. Support I don't know about, never needed it.

who's using OC48? don't understand what company he owns to surf the web at that speed..

I have 2Mbps/384Kbps cable at home, and a T3 connection at school.
DSL is not as cool as cable, i think.

If you work for a big company (i.e. IBM, Marriott, JP Morgan, etc), and work in the offices where hundreds of people are, you can attach to a network with multiple OC-48 connections. I know alot of people who work for places like AT&T and when they surf at the office, they have speeds of like 20 MBPS from their desktop/laptop computer.

Most big companies use these things for internet.

Hi,
I've had great experiences with my home DSL connection, 1.5m down/256k up, from Sprint. They use Earthlink as the ISP and I can honestly say I'm real pleased. I did have one problem with downtime due to hardware failure on their end. It was fixed within a day...and never a problem since.

Hi, I use a 56k modem which i have to admit is a pain when i want to doanload stuff, but when i am using it just for browsing or working it is fine, the one on my other pc is connected to a different phone line with 3 phones connected and is really slow but this one has its own line and works pretty fast..........I have to say tho it will be cool when i go to Uni later in the year and get cable access

They're called "modems" because marketing people decided that their cool new technologies would be intimidating for the unsophisticated home users if those poor slobs had to learn new complex technical terms like "router" and "network interface card."

But the technically astute people of the world know that "modem" is just short for "modulator/demodulator," and that a modem by definition modulates a serial data into audio and demodulates an audio signal into serial data.

That thingamajig that connects your computer to your cable company's system, or to your Digital Subscriber Line neither modulates or demodulates anything. Call it a "modem" if you like, but that's not what it is.

How do you reckon that? I'd say that it is entirely modulated.

The quality of DSL vs. cable depends on where you live. For home users over here, it's a no-brainer. Most people around here can't get DSL, and if they can, it's quite expensive for slow speeds, around $50 a month for 384 Kbps/128 Kbps, while cable here is around $40 a month for 2 Mbps/384 Kbps with cable modem included. I don't really consider a cable modem a modem. The topic was a bit misleading. It should have been called "What type of internet connection do you use?"

I've got 2 DSL lines - each one with about 2MB/sec download and about 1MB/sec upload. Not too bad :stickout :D

I have cable. 3mb down, 512k up, $50/mo. :crap: A tad expensive, but still a much better value than Qwest's $40 640k/256k.

If I lived in town, I would have DSL at 1.5M down/ 128K up for $40/month ($25 USD/month) and it's very reliable from friend's experiences. Again, from my friend's experiences, cable hosting isn't very fast or reliable :D

Actually, it's called a DSL Bridge.
Anyway, I have cable...3mbit down/1mbit up.
