Sorry 'bout this probably stupid question, but what is it anyway?

I know it's a network, but in almost every thread on this forum, people are talking in a negative way about them. Howcome? On their website (www.cogentco.com) they say they're working through a OC-192 backbone and OC-48. Those are quite fast connections.

Now that's why I don't understand you...

Explain!

;)

Thanks

Well, I'll throw in my 2 cents.. We don't have a Cogent connection but have downloaded stuff through one and used it for awhile. It was very fast and quick, and you can't beat the price. I think alot of people on here don't like them cause they are known to be going through the money really quick and everyone forsees them going belly up.. will they? Who knows..

I've read about downtimes, bgp problems, etc.. that I can't comment on since we don't use them as a provider..

Pretty fast connections to what exactly?

Cogent's internal network may very well be based on high bandwidth fibre optic lines (such as OC-192 and OC48), and within the network they may actually be able to deliver 100mbps or 1000mbps. However Cogent has to connect to the Internet, this is where there is plenty of room for admiration. IIRC, Cogents currently peers with Above.net and I believe NetRail.com, two providers, the capacity of the connections I don't know, however I doubt they are able to sustain thousands of customers (those wanting to connect to the Internet) at 100/1000mbps.

Yes but the thing I don't understand is why Cogent always keeps on getting negative/pessimistic comments. Ofcourse they're not able to realise such fast connections, but they're in any way not slower then other networks, right? I mean, why is everyone saying they're no good? Is it other than the speed then? Reliability/Stability?

I don't get it... explain people! ;)

Cogent actually owns NetRail, but NetRail's backbone never made it past 45Mbps, if I recall correctly. Cogent has peering arrangements with most of the big 5, but they are still trying to shove a lot more bandwidth to those providers then the other providers are trying to shove to them...

Cogent has been talked to death on this board, do a search and you can find out all the pros and cons of our buddies over at Cogent.
