.::DefCon::. 01-16-2002, 10:30 AM Check out www.Host2Own.com . They seem to offer a pretty good service. Any experience? Are they reliable, fast, etc. ?
Thanks

method5 01-16-2002, 10:41 AM I've never had any experience with them, but they look okay. One thing thought, I couldn't seem to find an order form..?
michaeln 01-16-2002, 11:20 AM They don't have an order form. You sign up for that free iBizaccount at:
http://www.ibizconsole.com/OnlineSignup/
From that account you order anything host2own has to offer. It is really pretty need but I ended up not ordering anything from them because I found it all a little confusing. Or to say, it isn't exactly self-explanitory.

palmtree 01-16-2002, 02:23 PM I looked at them a long time ago, but found the ibiz thingy really confusing also.. and I didn't see really the "value" in it..
Also, about their pricing, don't forget about the $50 "wholesale fee" per month on top of any servers you get..
Search the forums for more info..

phptalk 06-28-2002, 08:44 PM Hi defcon.
I have an experince with host2own before.
I rent-to-own a cobalt raq41 server about 1.5 year ago for about 8 months.
Experince:
No downtime, uptime was 100% <<<- that's the important thing.
Good support, by helpdesk and by phone.
Disadvantages:
You have to pay USD 100 extra for 320 GB band.
You have to pay USD 50 extra for IBIZCOnsole (Admin panel for DNS server, helpdesk, techical 24/7 support)
Why left? Just expensive, but recommended.
Incognito 06-29-2002, 12:11 AM Their pricing was once at the bottom, but now isn't. In addition, their speeds were once incredible, now aren't (at one time my tests consistently showed ping times averaging 15 ms.) So, today, what would one say:
Good-you can get Cobalt accounts for incredibly low prices. (Between $1 and $2 for 200 MB/3.2GB site).
Bad-they don't include MySQL in basic account-$5 upcharge.
Good-Offer cheapest Miva solution.
Good-Have lease to own program on servers.
Bad-server prices now not competitive.
Good-I always received excellent service
Bad-Know others who I respect that had major problems.
Neutral-excellent colo pricing. Decent connectivity.
Good-their ibizconsole is quite nice...wish they sold it outside their hosting.
Bad-$50/month fee.
Good-excellent pricing on internet access-$5 in California, $7-9 elsewhere.
Bad-Bandwidth on accounts and servers based on 95%, not actual/average.
Good-Very little downtime.
Conclusion-better alternatives, except not a bad place for some deeply discounted accounts (simple sites). Also, excellent option for internet access.
UmBillyCord 06-29-2002, 12:41 AM Incognito is right on with some of those good - bads. A few points I have noticed in three years of colo with them
1) Connectivty is great when not on Cogent.
2) Uptime is amazing. Only for those who host there can understand. I honestly think I have had 2 hours of TOTAL downtime in three years!
3) Support. Unbelievable. 24/7 to linux techs.
One error. "Bad-Bandwidth on accounts and servers based on 95%, not actual/average. "
This is a little off. They don't do 95% like others. They take the average monthly incoming and average outgoing and total them. That average is then the tier you are on. Basically, it is average use run off 95% rule. Anotherwords, you get a good deal.
They have a few annoying things. Crappy colo. Terrible racks. High price on extra power and IPs. But other then this, I would highly recommend them. Their new HA servers are a great deal.
Incognito 06-29-2002, 12:47 AM Where most of us, myself included, are minimizing phone support, I had the following occur.
I was installing Miva to play around with...decided not to use my Technical Support Staff....I entered some questions on the support board because I was experiencing some problems. The technician said he would be glad to answer there, but it would be a lot easier to do over the phone, so to please call and he would walk me through it. I called-he walked me through the entire process until Miva was working properly.
They also offer a unique service even for servers not hosted by them (as long as you are a reseller of theirs). They offer Website Load Balancing to provide 100% uptime for only $15/month (this is on top of the hosting of your site on two servers). We are currently testing that for a customer.
