People here used to say they were great. I don't really know what the current concensus is. Do a search here as I remember a fair amount of threads concerning them.

What are your requirements?

I have a reseller account with clook and support is great. However, I shied away from buying into their dedicated servers because there's no SLA attached to them. Although an SLA isn't a necessity, it helps provide important peace of mind that - in the event of something going critically wrong - you have people who will fix the situation within a specific timeframe, or offer credits in return. That's especially imporant to someone like myself, who is still getting used to a dedicated server environment. If clook offered any kind of SLA, I would have no problem at all with purchasing a server from them.

Thanks everyone and tehtech I'm not asking for any requirements just about the quality, performance of their servers

if you are looking for a real proactively and fully managed box, clook is a good choice. i know several of their admins and can vouch for their cluefulness.

brian,

i'm afraid your requirement is a bit unrealistic. offering guaranteed *response* times is possible, but guaranteeing mean time to diagnose or mean time to repair is simply insane - the problem could be arcane, severe or both. i find that honest providers would say the same thing, while the dishonest ones will promise you the world and make sure the SLA can be interpreted to cover their behinds.

since you've got a reseller account from clook on a server they manage, you should have a pretty good idea of how fast and how well they resolve issues that come up.

My understanding is that an SLA usually deals with issues such as hardware replacement, etc.

Companies that offer a SLA will often state that - once a hardware problem is diagnosed - it will be dealt with within a specified time frame - or else you start receiving billing credits.

If a company cannot offer a SLA, then that simply fails to inspire confidence that, if a crisis hit, you could have a corrective timeframe to work from.

As I've said before, I have received excellent support from Clook, and may yet end up purchasing a server from them - so long as it's UK based.

However, for my very first dedicated box I went for a company with a decent SLA, to help provide confidence in what was a rather large step for myself.

I know there have been pretty reputable companies offering no SLA - I seem to remember e-mailing Voxtreme last year, to be told that there was no SLA there at the time.

I am not asking for specific things simply asking what you're looking at. Clook.net is not for everyone. They are one of the best hosts I know of. I have had the pleasure of working for Jim and know some of the inter-workings of the company. Great business and clueful techs. Customers aint bad either. :D

If you require shared/reseller/managed dedicated/managed vps clook.net is a good valid choice aslong as you're not looking for all you can eat £5/mo. If you don't really want your server managed there are a lot better options ££/$$ wise.

All I have heard is good things about Clook, they seem to be willing to go the extra mile for their custom which is a very good thing.

But Brian, in my professional opinion I just don't think it is possible to offer a superb SLA on a managed server at this price point!

For example, we offer a basic SLA as standard that spells out exactly what you can expect such as 24 hour hardware replacement, 72 hour lead time on server upgrades and 1 hour reboot request. Not spectacular, but what do you expect at this price point?

Our mission critical SLAs cost up to 10 times the price of our standard pricing, only 5% of our dedicated customers can afford the luxury.

As far as I can tell, for £189.00 per month you receive a fully managed server from Clook. The likes of IBM charge 10 times the price for a "fully managed" service (if I'm interpreting Clook's managed definition correctly), that’s true value for money! At that price point, in my opinion service guarantees through a mission critical SLA is absolutely impossible.

ahh, much clearer now. i was under the impression that you were referring to a managed services SLA, rather than hardware replacement SLA.

Well, I've got a couple of sites I'll probably want to expand upon later on in a dedicated environment - if Clook can offer servers in UK datacenters then I'd certainly look very seriously at them. Jim and Alec I think have an excellent support record.

But, as before, as someone new to dedicated servers I was simply looking for that little extra re-assurance. Clook are a great company, though - I'm not knocking them in the slightest.

Clook's desire to maintain their excellent reputation should be assurance enough.
