Hi,

A client of ours has a RAQ2 Server. Users were complaining of slow FTP and SMTP connection. I fixed the FTP but modifying the proftpd.conf file with the lines

IdentLookups off
UseReverseDNS off

However I"m baffled as to the cause of a slow mail connection. The user's pop connection is fine but when they click on send/receive from the client it takes 20-30 seconds to send mail from the client to the RAQ. The RAQ has a static IP behind a NAT and does have a reverse map. /var/log/maillog doesn't indicate any problems.

Does any one have ideas?

Thanks
Matthew.

Does anyone have an answer for this. I'm having the same issue. A connection to the SMTP server takes 20-30 seconds just to connect. Everything else is fine.

This has to do with the fact that the computer sending the mail tries to do a reverse lookup, but after 20-30 seconds it times out, and just sends the mail anyway.

This isn't a RaQ-specific problem; it's a DNS issue.
It's been a VERY long time since I've worked on a RaQ, but I have a bunch of e-mails and tips archives, so I'll dig around and get you an answer.

You DO have a reverse name set up for the IP, correct?

I'm not quite sure how this all works. I have a static IP address (68.15.188.111) from my ISP. On it I run a web server and my RAQ email (2 different boxes) using port-forwarding with my router. My DNS is done through register.com.
