I'm looking at getting my first dedicated box and i'm liking the looks of 1and1.com's Root Server III.
The biggest problem that I am worried about is the fact that there datacenter is in New York( unless i'm mistaken) and I live in Seattle. Have any of you had problems with lag or slow connections to their servers from accross country? I'd much rather get something in the pacific north west, or even jsut west coast. The prices on everything hosted in seattle seem to be sky high ~_~.
Anyway thanks for any input.
Ohyeah and if you have any other thoughts on 1and1 as a company or another company that might suit my needs i'd like to hear them aswell!

I had some service with 1and1 when they start mass advertising. At first it was O.K but after wile all collapse. Everything was really slow. I cancel all except domain servece which is O.K with slowness. Cause it was O.K at first, I don't think it is related with location. All this is personal experience though.

Search for 1and1 on this forum. You will find negative an positive feedback as for every (serious) company out there.

My experience with 1 and 1 is that you get exactly what 1and1 offers in their packages and nothing more. I think that given their size they are very rigid in following their set procedures, much like dealing with the phone company. If you're expecting the kind of flexibility and almost personal attention that a smaller hosting company can provide, especially with the very small companies where it is almost a one man company, you will be left wanting more.

do you think it would be a good starting place in the dedicated server world?
I'm not a complete newb when it comes to running dedicated servers, but there is a lot that i still don't know

I would suggest going with GNAX or Layeredtech, they have good support staff and very good deals. They are also small enough to offer personalised support.

I have a 1and1 Root Server 1 (NYC). I live in Portland so I imagine my ping times are a little higher than yours. I'm happy with the server and Plesk 7 is very nice. If there is anything specific you would like to know/check out then send me an e-mail.

I dont have a dedicated server, thinking of getting one though, anyway, i have shared hosting with 1and1 for my domain scifi-source.com, and ive had a great expierience. Supports good, the features for the price are great, the only complaint i have is that they only offer 1 MySQL db on the plan i use, and will not let you buy another, when i sent them an email on it, the support answer was fairly rude, i think it was under 10 words long, but other then him, its been great. I would rather have a root server, because i like plesk, over the 1and1 CP, and i like the idea of the unlimited MySQL's...
