View Full Version : Fasthosts or Donhost
John89 01-14-2002, 03:48 PM Hi
I came to this board having already decided to use Fasthosts. I just wanted to check what people here had to say about them. Needless to say the general consensus ain't too good. Looking through more posts there is also an agreed opinion that MCHost and Splashhost are the way to go. But looking at these sites neither of them offers NT/2K hosting which I need for most of my sites.
I’ve looked at other reseller options for the Windows platform mentioned on this board but none seem to offer the same features as Fasthosts or Donhost (unlimited domains at £50 p/m).
So my question boils down to who should I use between Fasthosts and Donhost? Or am I mad for still considering these companies with all the bad comments about them here? Or are they just the giants that everyone loves to hate? Is there the equivalent of Splashhost or MCHost for NT / 2K?
TIA
John

Yes, I would say. If you are serious about your business then simply go somewhere else.
As you say, you won't find their prices elsewhere, but I think there is a reason for that.
People I know talk a lot about CrystalTech ( I had a dedicated there once, and can confirm their support is great ). Their reseller plan might not be the most profitable, but I would say go with someone really good until you have customers to justify your own boxes.

Between these two, Donhost. Support much improoved support in last few months, service good.
I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you'll be lucky to get 50% uptime with fasthosts  and don't get me started on Support!
mdrussell 01-14-2002, 04:31 PM It's a good job you came here before signing up with either of those two hosts - from personal experience with them both (before we entered the hosting industry, and i don't mean to bitch - my comments reflect my own views and not my company's), the uptime is minimal, the support is non existant, and they will close your account given any chance they can.
I recommend you look at plans provided by www.splashhost.com, www.mchost.com, www.venturesonline.com, and www.kdawebservices.com who will provide you with a much better service.
Regards
Matt

John Can you elaborate on why you need an NT server?
John89 01-14-2002, 04:42 PM Can you elaborate on why you need an NT server?
Because I use ASP for server side scripting.

NOT for Donhost! Not *now* anyway. I signed up half a year ago, and I've never had problems with support (usual e-mail reply time 5mins), and will bend over backwards to help. As for uptime, I think I remember one server being down for approx 10mins back in Nov/Dec due to fan failure or somthing. That's It! Of course we all have our own opinion on them but if their recent performance is anything to go by they've really come on.
[ok enough defending the 'bad guys' for today :) ]
mdrussell 01-14-2002, 04:49 PM Out of interest, which URL do you host with them?
Doesn't the fact that having such things as FTP access cut-off to allow their 'staff' (or what's left of them?) to rest? Seemed a little weird to me...

Is that real? I mean is that from a newspaper that auctally exsits? or did someone make that?
tsotsi 07-29-2011, 05:20 PM My advice would be to avoid Fast Hosts like the plague, I ignored all the negative press about them and decided to try their hosting service, I am sorry I did. I uploaded a data base to their servers (presta shop) which would not work properly. They were unable to provide useful advice or find a solution to the problems. I deleted and moved to another hosting company within 5 days of the failed attempt. To my utter surprise, they insisted that I pay for hosting for a full year.....
I can honestly say that the only thing they are good at is getting money off you. Their customer service is arrogant at best.
Avoid Fast Hosts at all costs, use Don Hosts instead.
AL-Benjamin 07-29-2011, 07:44 PM Don't do it, i repeat just don't do it.
Also, Donhost is webfussion. Webfussion's reseller accounts are cheaper.
dhcart 07-30-2011, 05:53 PM They ask extra moneys for some features:
Personal name servers £79.99 per year
Anti-Spam £19.99 per site per year
Windows raw log files £10 per site per year
ASP.NET 1.1 £10 per site per year
Microsoft SQL database £25 each per month
FrontPage 2002 extensions £10 per site per year
It's a very expensive solution.
