View Full Version : Looking fast unix virtual server
jfconti 11-14-2000, 05:35 PM Hi.
Im looking for a quality web hosting company with:
Unix/Linux Virtual Server
200-500 MB
Subdomains and/or domain pointers
100 POP3 (or unlimited)
mySQL
PHP (and Perl)
SSI (shtml)
1 SSH/Telnet
1 FTP
downlodeable logs and statistics
web control panel
and the other usual thinks
I have one account with VServers, $95, 250 MB, unlimited pop3, etc. They have great service, but its located in Seattle, so the ping time from here (Argentina) its about 900 ms, and its very slow to us. Our Windows hosting its CrystalTech.com, located in Arizona, and we have 650 ms, a better ping timing, and a great host for running ASP and SQL Server, but its only a Windows host. We have a new (big) customer, and their needs starts with a Unix host, so we dont want to buy another VServer account because of timing. We look in many webhostings directorys and forums, and the only company that fits the specs are AdGrafix.com.
The question are:
Any info about adgrafix?
Any other hosting company with this services?
Thank you very much, this is a great forum!
Chicken 11-14-2000, 08:28 PM Welcome Felipe!
I searched the forum for Adgarfix and only found your question and a post by Adgrafix themselves (made back in March). If you can't dig up anything on them, you might consider checking out a thread that will show you many of the fine hosts that are here on this board.
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=3053
Some are here answering questions almost daily, and you're bound to at least get some feedback from members/other hosts here. Everyone will try to help you as much as they can, and again, welcome!
Matt Lightner 11-14-2000, 09:41 PM Try pinging vdi.net and see how that ping time is.
If the ping time is acceptable to your customer, then there are quite a few VDI-based hosts that offer such services.

cbaker17 11-14-2000, 10:53 PM I myself hate adgraphix because of a ton of spam they were sending out but to be fair I think they have a pretty good network and service.
jfconti 11-15-2000, 02:11 PM Thanks All for replys.
vdi.net has the same ping times (900 ms).
Site5.com have good offer and about 600 ms, so its the winner for now, but still looking a better one.
Thanks Again,
DynastyHost 11-15-2000, 02:27 PM Just out of curiosity, try ping one of the Alabanza Host.
http://www.iserver.com/ provides virtual servers, but they aren't exactly cheap.
jfconti 11-21-2000, 03:55 PM Thanks all.
Alabanza its very fast, but its have an unacceptable trace route of 20 or more hosts! (we have 12-18 hops to all mayor USA www from here).
Yes, i know iserver, but its expensive.
Conclusion: I need something like VServers, but more fast than they are.
Wazeh 11-21-2000, 07:44 PM Felipe, you don't have an email address listed. please

MarineArchitecture 11-21-2000, 08:12 PM Alabanza its very fast, but its have an unacceptable trace route of 20 or more hosts
If the ping time is fast, why does the number of hops in the tracrt matter?
Hehe, Annette, I was going to say that. Also in other post.
brently27 11-22-2000, 02:41 PM I know Communitech.Net have many upstream providers. I would try pining them.
jfconti 11-24-2000, 12:41 PM Yes, I know communitech, looks great, but i read many many post in forums about bad services, closing webs without asking, and so.
Thanks all for posting.
brently27 11-24-2000, 12:55 PM I was just trying to help you out. I have heard CT is not that bad anymore, have not heard anything about them for a while in here. Maybe they fixed some problems or something.
I was a former customer/reseller of Adgrafix. I believe they were one of the first few companies to give customers a browser-based control panel. Besides this reason, I liked the name server aliasing feature. I stopped using Adgrafix after they increased their prices and began charging for certain features/options that were once included in my hosting plan.
Deb Suran 11-25-2000, 09:46 AM I have been monitoring complaints about hosts for some time, and Communitech has been closing accounts with little or no notice for at least the past 18 months, especially accounts using forum or other specialty software. I have also seen two or three reports from former customers that, once they'd moved to a dedicated server, they found they were using only a fraction of the bandwidth CT had quoted as the reason for kicking them off their servers. One of those reports was here, so you might be able to find it if you search.
There are other, better hosts.

Ybandy 11-26-2000, 06:12 PM I've seen similar postings about CT as well. However, people/competitors for what ever reason some times engage in blacmailing. So one has to be very carefull before jumping to any conclusions. And that means one should thouroughly investigate any web hosting company before commiting.

How do you PING a host from your own computer?
aaron
SickofAds 11-27-2000, 02:06 AM Open a DOS window and type ping (hostname) and hit enter.
etLux 11-27-2000, 12:14 PM Ping tells you very little... and nothing about intervening routing. It's primary purpose is to observe round trip time, packet losses, and TTL's (TTL = Time To Live).
Open a DOS window and type:
tracert hostname.com
<ENTER>
This will show all of the intervening nodes between you and the host, along with timings in milliseconds (these will be the first three numbers on each line).
As problems with connectivity are more frequently intranodal than with the host, the tracert tells the clearer story.
